KLM 787 Amsterdam-Mexico City Declares Emergency

In the last few moments, a KLM Boeing 787 from Amsterdam and Mexico City has declared an emergency over the Atlantic and is diverting to Reykjavik.

PH-BHD is understood to be the aircraft involved in the emergency.

In the last few moments, a KLM Boeing 787 from Amsterdam and Mexico City has declared an emergency over the Atlantic and is diverting to Reykjavik.

UPDATE #1 @ 1613 UK time – The crew onboard has declared an emergency and is currently at 28,400 feet at the moment.

UPDATE #2 @ 1616 UK time – The KLM flight is descending through FL240, with Reykjavik 100% confirmed as the diversion field.

EMERGENCY UPDATE #3 @ 1617 UK time – PH-BHD is the aircraft involved in the incident.

As per data from Planespotters.net, PH-BHD is a 10.1 year old Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner that was delivered to the airline back in February 2016.

Of the 787-9 Dreamliner variant, KLM has 13 of them in their fleet, of which 12 are in active service and one is parked, with an average fleet age of 9.2 years.

As well as the 787-9 Dreamliner, KLM has the following other aircraft in their mainline fleet:

  • 12 Airbus A321s
  • 11 Airbus A330s
  • 41 Boeing 737s
  • 31 Boeing 777s
  • 15 Boeing 787-10s

In total, the carrier has 123 aircraft in their mainline fleet, of which 116 are in active service, seven are parked, and host an average fleet age of 13.4 years.

UPDATE #4 @ 1620 UK time – KL685 has changed it’s squawk code from 7700 to 2747.

The emergency looks under control but the diversion is still happening.

UPDATE #5 @ 1622 UK time – Based on the winds at Reykjavik, the Boeing 787 may opt for a straight-in approach for ILS Runway 01.

UPDATE #6 @ 1634 UK time – KL685 is now on final approach for Runway 01 in Reykjavik.

UPDATE #7 @ 1643 UK time – TOUCHDOWN!

KLM flight KL685, originally enroute to Mexico City from Amsterdam, has touched down safely into Reykjavik following an emergency declaration and subsequent diversion.

At this time, the reason for the emergency is unclear.

As soon as we have more information on this, then we will update you accordingly.
