Ryanair Opens New Base in Tirana, Albania

Ryanair has formally opened its new base at Tirana International Airport, marking one of the most significant expansions in Albania’s aviation history.

The move, confirmed during celebrations on 1 April, establishes four aircraft in the Albanian capital and represents a US$400 million investment.

According to the document, “Ryanair, Albania’s only low fare airline, today celebrated the opening of its new 4 aircraft base… in Tirana” .

The launch cements Ryanair’s position as the country’s dominant low‑fare operator and underscores Albania’s rapid rise as Europe’s fastest‑growing aviation market.

With 44 routes planned for Summer 2026, including 21 new additions, the airline expects to grow annual traffic by more than fifty percent to reach four million passengers.

Below are the 21 new additions:

A Strategic Bet on Tirana Zero‑Tax Aviation Policy

Ryanair’s decision to expand so aggressively in Albania is directly tied to the government’s pro‑growth aviation framework.

The document highlights that this surge “is a direct result of the Albanian Govt’s pro‑growth zero tax aviation policy and Tirana Airport’s growth incentive schemes” .

For Ryanair, the combination of low operating costs, strong outbound demand, and a rapidly expanding tourism sector creates a uniquely favourable environment.

Albania’s post‑pandemic recovery has outpaced much of Europe, with Tirana International Airport ranking among the continent’s best‑recovered hubs.

The airline’s long‑term plan is equally ambitious.

Ryanair intends to base up to six Boeing 737 aircraft in Tirana by 2030, increasing annual traffic to more than six million passengers and operating over sixty routes.

This trajectory is contingent on the continuation of Albania’s zero‑tax policy and the airport’s commitment to maintaining competitive charges.

The Summer 2026 schedule represents Ryanair’s largest ever programme in Albania.

The 44‑route network includes new links to Alghero, Dublin, Eindhoven, Genoa, Malta, Milan, and Naples, strengthening both leisure and diaspora travel flows.

The airline expects this expansion to support more than 3,000 jobs across the country, including 120 newly created high‑paid roles for pilots, engineers, and cabin crew based in Tirana.

As the press release states, the base will be “supporting over 3,000 jobs, incl. 120 new high‑paid jobs for Ryanair pilots, engineers and cabin crew” .

To mark the launch, Ryanair has introduced a three‑day seat sale with fares starting at €21.99, reinforcing its strategy of stimulating demand through aggressive pricing.

Leadership Perspectives on a Transformational Milestone

Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary described the opening as a pivotal moment for both the airline and Albania’s aviation sector.

He emphasised that the base will “deliver record traffic growth of over 50 percent to 4m pax in 2026” and reaffirmed Ryanair’s commitment to long‑term investment, provided the current policy environment remains stable.

O’Leary also reiterated Albania’s status as Europe’s fastest‑growing aviation market, a theme echoed throughout the announcement.

The airline sees Albania not as a peripheral operation but as a core growth engine within its wider European network.

Tirana Airport’s Chief Operating Officer, Piervittorio Farabbi, highlighted the scale of the airport’s own transformation.

He noted that since Ryanair’s arrival in October 2023, the airline has “continuously challenged us to raise our standards and deliver true operational excellence” .

Farabbi pointed to the completion of a €120 million capital expenditure programme, which expanded terminal and airside capacity at record speed.

He credited this investment, along with operational improvements in turnaround performance and efficiency, as key factors in securing Ryanair’s confidence.

New Tirana Base: A New Chapter for Albania’s Aviation Landscape

The opening of Ryanair’s Tirana base marks more than a fleet deployment.

It signals a structural shift in Albania’s connectivity, tourism potential, and competitive positioning within the European market.

Low‑fare access has historically been limited in Albania, with high prices and constrained capacity shaping travel behaviour.

Ryanair’s entry has already begun to reshape that dynamic, and the new base accelerates the transition toward a more open, competitive, and internationally connected aviation ecosystem.

For Albania, the benefits extend beyond passenger numbers.

Increased route diversity supports economic development, strengthens ties with European labour markets, and enhances the country’s appeal as a year‑round tourism destination.

For Ryanair, Tirana represents a rare opportunity: a fast‑growing market with low costs, strong demand, and a government aligned with aviation‑led economic expansion.

As both sides look ahead to 2030, the partnership appears poised to deepen.

If policy stability holds, Albania could become one of Ryanair’s most significant growth stories of the decade.
