Nuremberg Airport Shuts Down as Eurofighter Jets Escort Aircraft During Aviation Emergency

Nuremberg Airport in Germany suspended all flight operations on Tuesday, October 13, following an aviation emergency involving an aircraft arriving from the Greek island of Corfu.

The incident prompted a police operation and the deployment of German Air Force Eurofighter jets, with authorities investigating the circumstances surrounding the event.

The airport confirmed that flights had been suspended but initially provided limited information about the nature of the emergency.

The disruption left aircraft unable to take off or land while emergency procedures were carried out at Nuremberg.

According to German media reports, the aircraft involved was approaching Nuremberg after departing Corfu.

Police subsequently confirmed that the aircraft had landed safely, although investigations into the cause of the incident remained ongoing.

Eurofighter Jets Escort Aircraft to Nuremberg

Eurofighter jets were scrambled to escort the incoming aircraft, according to an airport spokesperson cited by German media.

The military aircraft accompanied the flight before returning to their base following the safe landing at Nuremberg.

The German Press Agency reported that an emergency code had been issued before the aircraft arrived.

However, authorities had not publicly established the precise nature of the emergency or confirmed what prompted the military response.

Police described the situation as an unclear aviation emergency in a statement published on social media.

Officials confirmed that the aircraft had landed safely at Nuremberg and said investigations were underway to determine what had happened.

The deployment of military aircraft and the temporary closure of Nuremberg Airport highlighted the seriousness with which authorities treated the incident.

Further details about the aircraft, its occupants and the circumstances that led to the escort had not been fully established in the initial reports.

Earlier Drone Reports Disrupted Flights

The latest emergency came after suspected drone sightings disrupted operations at Nuremberg Airport during the early hours of Tuesday morning.

According to reports, three pilots independently reported seeing a possible unidentified object during takeoff or landing between approximately 2am and 4am local time.

The reports prompted a precautionary security operation involving border police, airport management and German air traffic control.

Authorities deployed a police helicopter as part of the search. However, police spokesperson Michael Petzold said the measures did not result in confirmation of the reported object.

The Nuremberg border police inspectorate subsequently launched further investigations to establish what the pilots had seen.

The earlier disruption affected six flights, with two arriving aircraft diverting temporarily to Cologne and Prague before subsequently continuing to Nuremberg. Four departing flights were also delayed.

It remained unclear whether the earlier suspected drone sightings were connected to the later aviation emergency involving the aircraft from Corfu.

Nuremberg Airport is an important regional aviation hub in Bavaria and handles approximately four million passengers annually.

Any prolonged suspension of flight operations has the potential to disrupt airline schedules, passenger connections and aircraft movements across the region.

The incident also comes amid heightened scrutiny of suspected drone activity around German airports and critical infrastructure.

However, investigators had not established a connection between the Nuremberg emergency and any wider security threat.

For now, the aircraft from Corfu has landed safely, and the circumstances behind the aviation emergency remain under investigation.

Further information from police, airport authorities and the German military is expected to clarify why the Eurofighter jets were deployed and what led to the temporary suspension of flight operations at Nuremberg Airport.

Flights looked to have resumed at Nuremberg Airport since the closure this morning, with a Ryanair flight from Alicante landing at just after 2pm local time.
