Rolls-Royce Wins Avolon Order for 70 Trent 7000 Engines: What It Means

Rolls-Royce has secured an order for 70 Trent 7000 engines from aircraft lessor Avolon, powering 35 Airbus A330neo widebodies.

Rolls-Royce has announced an order for 70 Trent 7000 engines from aircraft lessor Avolon, enough to power 35 Airbus A330neo widebodies. The announcement came on 13 October 2026, according to AeroTime.

The deal follows Avolon's broader push into widebody capacity, placing the Trent 7000 at the centre of one of the leasing industry's more significant recent commitments. Use Manufacturer Search to explore Rolls-Royce's full engine portfolio and related coverage.

What Avolon Ordered and Why It Matters

The 70 engines are tied directly to 35 A330-900 aircraft that Avolon ordered from Airbus on 9 October 2026. That agreement, as AeroTime reports, also included 75 A320neo Family jets, bringing the total Airbus order to 110 aircraft with options for a further 100.

With this latest commitment, Avolon's total A330-900 order book has risen to 114 aircraft, while its A320 Family backlog now stands at 650, according to AeroTime.

The Trent 7000: Exclusive to the A330neo

The Trent 7000 is the exclusive engine for the Airbus A330neo, making it the only option available to any operator of the type. Rolls-Royce states that the engine has now accumulated more than five million flying hours and is based on Trent XWB technology.

The A330neo and Trent 7000 combination delivers a 14% better fuel burn per seat than the previous generation, according to Rolls-Royce. The engine is also certified to operate on a 50% sustainable aviation fuel blend today, and has been proven compatible with up to 100% SAF.

What Both Sides Said

Ewen McDonald, Chief Customer Officer at Rolls-Royce, welcomed Avolon's "continued trust and partnership in the Trent 7000 programme," according to AeroTime. He described Avolon as "an important customer and long-standing supporter of this aircraft and engine combination, which forms a large part of its widebody fleet."

Will Pitcher, Head of Powerplant Strategy and Asset Solutions at Avolon, said the A330neo "remains one of the most capable and efficient widebody aircraft in the market today." He added that the Trent 7000 "offers our airline customers a compelling combination of fuel efficiency, operational reliability and range," and that the order "strengthens our ability to support customers' fleet renewal and growth plans over the coming decade," as quoted by Zawya.

Avolon Chief Executive Andy Cronin, speaking about the wider Airbus order, said the company continues "to see strong demand for new aircraft" and that the deal "further strengthens our long-term delivery pipeline," according to AeroTime.

Avolon's Widebody Strategy

Cronin also noted that Avolon expects "demand for both the A330neo and A320neo to remain strong given the long-term growth trajectory of the aviation sector," as reported by AeroTime. The A330-900 order book now at 114 aircraft reflects a sustained rather than opportunistic bet on the type.

For Rolls-Royce, the win consolidates the Trent 7000's position given its exclusive status on the platform. Every A330neo ordered anywhere in the world is a guaranteed Trent 7000 customer.

The Bottom Line

This order is a straightforward consequence of Avolon's October 2026 Airbus deal, but the scale of the lessor's widebody commitment is notable. A total A330-900 backlog of 114 aircraft places Avolon among the most significant supporters of the type in the leasing market.

For Rolls-Royce, the exclusive engine arrangement means that Avolon's fleet growth translates directly into engine revenue, with no competitive tender required. The Trent 7000's SAF compatibility also positions both manufacturer and lessor well as airline customers face growing pressure to demonstrate progress on emissions.
