United Airlines Expands Economy Meal Pre-Order to Shorter Flights
United Airlines has lowered the distance threshold for its Economy meal pre-order service, adding around 420 flights and 65,000 passengers per day.

United Airlines' meal pre-order service for Economy passengers has expanded to cover shorter routes, a change that Aviation Business News reports will bring the United meal pre-order option to around 420 additional flights and approximately 65,000 more passengers per day.

The move reflects a broader push by airlines to improve the onboard experience as competition for passenger loyalty intensifies. United's latest step addresses a longstanding frustration for economy travellers: arriving at their seat to find the meal they wanted has already gone.
What Has Changed With the United Meal Pre-Order Service
The key change is a lower distance threshold. According to Aviation Business News, the minimum route length qualifying for pre-orders has dropped from over 1,190 miles to over 900 miles on flights across North America and the Caribbean.
That reduction opens the service to a substantial number of previously excluded routes. Passengers on those flights can now secure their meal choice well in advance of boarding.
How the Pre-Order Process Works
Customers can visit United's website or mobile app to make their selection. Aviation Business News notes that the ordering window opens five days before departure and closes 24 hours before the flight.
The range of food options is available to browse during that window, giving travellers time to decide rather than choosing under pressure from a passing trolley.
What United Says
David Kinzelman, United's Chief Customer Officer, explained the reasoning behind the expansion. "We want our customers to have more of what they value when they fly: more choice, more convenience and a better experience onboard," he said.
The framing positions pre-ordering as part of a wider effort to give economy passengers a level of control more typically associated with premium cabins.
Where This Fits in the Wider Passenger Experience Picture
Airlines have been investing across multiple areas of the passenger experience in recent years. Connectivity has been one of the most visible fronts, as we explored when Starlink proved popular across the airline industry. Catering choice is now following a similar pattern, with pre-ordering tools reducing waste and improving satisfaction at the same time.
For United, extending meal pre-orders to shorter routes is a relatively low-cost way to differentiate its economy product without restructuring fares or cabins.
The Bottom Line
The expansion of United's meal pre-order service is a practical improvement for economy passengers on mid-range North American and Caribbean routes. Lowering the threshold from 1,190 to 900 miles brings tens of thousands of additional travellers into the programme each day.
It is a small but meaningful change, and one that other carriers will likely note. You can explore United's full network and compare it with other carriers using our Airline Search tool.
