daa International Wins VIP Terminal Contract at Washington Dulles
Irish airport operator daa International has secured a contract to develop and run a new VIP passenger terminal at Washington Dulles International Airport.

daa International has secured a contract to develop, lease and operate a new VIP passenger terminal at Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), marking the first dedicated premium facility of its kind serving the Washington metropolitan region.

The deal extends the Irish airport group's footprint in North America at a time when demand for premium airport services is growing across the globe. RTÉ reports that the planned facility will cover 37,000 square feet and offer commercial airline passengers a premium alternative to the standard terminal experience.
What the Contract Covers
The project is structured in two phases. A 30-month development period will be followed by a 20-year operating term, according to RTÉ.
That operating term gives daa International a long-term stake in one of the United States' most prominent international gateways. The Washington Post notes that Dulles Airport is moving forward with the VIP terminal as it looks to broaden the range of experiences available to travellers.
What daa International Brings to the Project
daa International is the international airport management and advisory arm of the daa Group, which is perhaps best known in Ireland for operating Dublin Airport. The company already runs the Platinum VIP private terminal at Dublin Airport, is designing a VIP terminal in Vietnam, and manages Red Sea International Airport in Saudi Arabia, according to RTÉ.
Its travel retail business, ARI, has also recently been awarded the duty-free contract at JFK Terminal 4, strengthening the group's broader North American presence.
Nick Cole, daa Deputy CEO and CEO of daa International, said Washington Dulles plays a vital role in connecting the United States with the world. "We look forward to bringing our international airport experience and operational expertise to the delivery of a VIP facility that reflects the airport's global standing," he said.
Cole added: "This appointment demonstrates the continued confidence that airport authorities place in daa International's ability to deliver complex, high-profile aviation projects."
What the Airport Authority Says
Chryssa Westerlund, Executive Vice President and Chief Revenue Officer at the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA), said the new terminal reflects a commitment to passenger choice. "By introducing this premium service, Dulles is responding to traveller demand, supporting continued growth and joining other leading international airports around the world that offer elevated services for business and leisure travellers alike," she said.
The terminal will be the first of its kind in the Washington metropolitan region, a notable gap given the area's status as a major hub for international travel.
The Irish Government's View
Ireland's Minister for Transport, Darragh O'Brien, welcomed the contract, framing it as a demonstration of Irish aviation expertise on an international stage. "The award of this contract to daa International is a positive endorsement of the expertise, innovation and international reputation that daa has built in international airport management and advisory services," he said.
O'Brien also noted that the contract supports Irish companies operating within the US transportation and logistics network.
Why Premium Terminals Are on the Rise
The Dulles project is part of a wider trend. Airports around the world have invested in dedicated VIP and premium facilities in recent years, driven by growing demand from both business and leisure travellers willing to pay for a separated, quieter experience away from the main terminal.
daa International's portfolio shows how specialist operators are increasingly being brought in to design and run these facilities rather than leaving them to the airport authority itself. The 20-year operating term at Dulles suggests confidence on both sides that demand will remain strong over the long run.

The Bottom Line
daa International has won a significant long-term contract that places the Irish group at the heart of one of America's most important international airports for at least two decades. The 37,000-square-foot facility will be the first dedicated VIP terminal serving the Washington area, and the 30-month development phase means it is unlikely to open before late 2028 at the earliest.
The contract builds on daa's existing premium terminal expertise in Dublin and its growing international pipeline, and it arrives alongside ARI's JFK duty-free win. For daa, North America is clearly a strategic priority.
