London Stansted Airport has celebrated the busiest year in its history, surpassing the 30‑million‑passenger milestone for the first time and cementing its position as one of the UK’s fastest‑growing major airports.

According to the airport’s latest figures, 2025 delivered unprecedented demand, expanded route networks, and a surge in festive-season travel that pushed annual volumes to new heights.

The airport’s performance reflects a combination of strategic route development, increased seat capacity, and strong consumer appetite for international travel.

Across the year, Stansted recorded 16 separate days when passenger numbers exceeded 100,000—up from 10 such days the previous year—highlighting the scale of demand and the airport’s ability to manage sustained high throughput.

A Milestone Year for Growth at London Stansted…

The headline achievement—breaking the 30‑million‑passenger barrier—marks a significant moment for Stansted, which has long been one of the UK’s most important gateways for short‑haul European travel.

The airport’s growth trajectory has been supported by a broadening of its destination portfolio, now offering more than 200 routes spanning Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.

December played a pivotal role in pushing the airport over the milestone.

Stansted recorded its busiest December on record, handling 2.26 million passengers, a 1.6% increase compared with the same month in 2024.

The festive period saw strong demand from both UK travellers heading abroad and international visitors choosing Stansted as their entry point to London and the East of England.

The airport noted that thousands of overseas passengers used Stansted as their gateway during Christmas and New Year, reflecting the airport’s growing appeal among inbound travellers seeking convenient access to the capital and surrounding regions.

Expanding Connectivity and Capacity

A key driver of Stansted’s record-breaking year was the launch of new routes and increased seat capacity across several of its most popular destinations.

Airlines operating from the airport expanded frequencies and introduced additional aircraft to meet rising demand, contributing to the airport’s busiest-ever operational calendar.

Dublin and Istanbul emerged as the two most popular destinations of the year, with nearly one million passengers travelling to and from each city.

Edinburgh also remained a consistently strong performer, reinforcing Stansted’s role as a major domestic connector as well as an international hub.

The airport’s ability to scale operations while maintaining service levels has been central to its success.

With more than 200 destinations now available, Stansted continues to offer one of the widest selections of routes among UK airports, appealing to both leisure and business travellers seeking value, convenience, and choice.

The December surge was particularly notable, driven by holidaymakers taking advantage of the airport’s extensive route network and competitive fares.

The combination of strong outbound demand and a significant influx of inbound visitors created a dynamic travel period that pushed Stansted’s monthly figures to new highs.

The airport highlighted that the festive season’s performance was underpinned by passengers “taking advantage of the great value, convenience and choice of more than 200 destinations on offer from their local airport”.

This emphasis on value and accessibility has long been a cornerstone of Stansted’s appeal, particularly for travellers in London, Essex, Hertfordshire, and the wider East of England.

A Strong Year for MAG

London Stansted’s record performance contributed significantly to the success of Manchester Airports Group (MAG), which operates Manchester, London Stansted, and East Midlands airports.

MAG reported serving 66 million passengers in 2025, the highest 12‑month total in its history, with Stansted and Manchester both delivering record-breaking numbers.

The group also recorded a strong December, handling 4.8 million passengers across its three airports during the festive period—an increase of 3.9% year-on-year.

Stansted’s contribution was a major component of this growth, reinforcing its strategic importance within the group’s wider portfolio.

Looking Ahead

Stansted’s record year sets a strong foundation for continued growth in 2026.

With airlines already signalling further capacity increases and new route announcements expected, the airport is well positioned to build on its momentum.

The combination of rising demand, expanded connectivity, and the airport’s strategic location—just 40 miles from central London—continues to make Stansted an increasingly attractive choice for travellers.

Its role as a key gateway for both outbound UK passengers and inbound international visitors is expected to strengthen further as global travel patterns continue to normalise and expand.

As Stansted celebrates its busiest year on record, the airport’s leadership will now focus on sustaining growth while enhancing the passenger experience.

With more than 30 million travellers passing through its terminals in 2025, the airport has demonstrated both its operational resilience and its growing importance within the UK aviation landscape.
