American Airlines Takes Delivery of First E175 with Recaro R2 Seats

American Airlines has received the first Embraer E175 fitted with Recaro R2 passenger seats, becoming the first US carrier to introduce the new-generation seating on the type.

The American Airlines E175 has reached a milestone as the carrier takes delivery of the first Embraer E175 equipped with Recaro R2 passenger seats, making it the first US airline to introduce the new-generation seating on the type, according to Aviation24.be.

The delivery was announced on 19 October, with the seats expected to enter passenger service this autumn. The move forms part of Embraer's continuing investment in the E175, a programme aimed at bringing the regional jet's cabin experience closer to that of the newer E2 family.

What the Recaro R2 Seat Offers

The R2 has been designed for short- and medium-haul operations. Aviation24.be reports that it features a tablet holder, a six-way adjustable headrest and a slim backrest intended to increase personal space and knee clearance for passengers.

American's version of the seat includes customised upholstery matched to the aircraft's new interior finishes. The combination of bespoke trim and the updated cabin materials gives the E175 a more consistent look alongside the rest of American's mainline fleet.

Why American Chose the R2

Recaro cited the seat's pre-certification status as a factor in its selection, alongside its ability to meet American's entry-into-service timetable, according to Aviation24.be. Having a seat already progressed through certification reduces the risk of delays when an airline is working to a fixed schedule.

Aviation Business News notes that the delivery continues Embraer's investment in upgrades for the E175, its bestselling regional aircraft. Embraer also highlighted enhanced data connectivity and next-generation weather radar among recent developments for the platform, though it did not confirm whether those systems are fitted to the specific aircraft delivered to American.

What Is Not Yet Known

Neither Embraer nor American specified the total number of aircraft covered by the new seating arrangement, according to Aviation24.be. No announcement has been made regarding a retrofit programme for the existing E175s already in American's regional fleet.

The scale of the rollout therefore remains unclear. Passengers on American Eagle-operated E175 routes will need to wait for further detail on when and where the new seats will appear beyond the initial delivery.

What the American Airlines E175 Programme Means for the Industry

The E175 is the dominant regional jet in the United States, operated widely under capacity purchase agreements with major carriers. A cabin upgrade of this kind, introduced at the first-delivery stage rather than through retrofit, signals that Embraer is treating the platform as a live product rather than one approaching the end of its development cycle.

Bringing the passenger experience closer to E2 standards matters commercially. Airlines and their regional partners compete partly on the quality of the onboard product, and a more comfortable seat on a short sector can influence how travellers and corporate buyers perceive a carrier's regional network.

The Bottom Line

American Airlines has secured a meaningful, if incremental, cabin improvement for its Embraer E175 fleet, becoming the first US airline to introduce Recaro R2 seating on the type. The seats are due in service this autumn, though the scope of the programme beyond this initial aircraft has not been confirmed.

The key questions now are how quickly the seating reaches passengers on regular routes, and whether American or Embraer announce a broader rollout across the existing E175 fleet.
