British Airways is making two significant transatlantic moves for 2027, adding a third daily frequency between London Heathrow and San Francisco and pushing its Heathrow–Vancouver operation to 14 weekly flights across the peak summer period.

The changes reflect the carrier's confidence in both the North American leisure and business markets at a time when transpacific and transatlantic capacity is closely watched. Readers can explore British Airways' full network using our Airline Search tool.
British Airways Adds a Third Daily Heathrow–San Francisco Service
According to AeroRoutes, British Airways will launch a third daily Heathrow to San Francisco (SFO) service from 2 May 2027. The new rotation will operate as BA279 outbound and BA278 on the return, using a Boeing 777-300ER.
The existing Heathrow–San Francisco operation already runs twice daily, so this addition gives the route a meaningful frequency uplift for the summer season. Three daily departures between two of the world's major aviation hubs makes the service a strong proposition for connecting passengers as well as point-to-point travellers.
Vancouver: More Frequencies and a Gatwick Seasonal Return
The Vancouver picture is slightly more layered. AeroRoutes reports that British Airways will serve London Heathrow to Vancouver (YVR) 14 times weekly between 29 June and 5 September 2027. That is a substantial increase over a standard double-daily operation for the peak weeks of the summer schedule.
Within that expanded programme, the BA085/084 rotation will operate using a Boeing 777-200ER rather than the Airbus A350-1000 between those same dates. Passengers booked expecting the A350-1000 should check their booking details as the summer period approaches.
Separately, British Airways will also run a seasonal London Gatwick to Vancouver daily service, starting 1 May 2027. Gatwick's long-haul operation has seen various changes in recent years, and a daily Vancouver service from the start of May positions the airline to capture early-summer demand from the south London gateway.
What This Means for Passengers
The combination of a third Heathrow–San Francisco daily service and a 14-times-weekly Heathrow–Vancouver programme gives passengers considerably more flexibility when booking transatlantic travel for summer 2027. More seats also generally means more competitive pricing, though we draw no conclusions about fares here.
The aircraft swap on BA085/084 from the A350-1000 to the 777-200ER is the one detail worth flagging for travellers who chose their booking specifically for the newer type. Both are wide-body long-haul aircraft, but the cabin products differ. Readers interested in the Boeing 777 family can search the type via our Aircraft Search.
Other Carriers Also Adjusting North American Capacity
British Airways is not alone in reshaping its North American network for 2027. AeroRoutes also notes that United Airlines is expanding from San Francisco with three new or resumed routes effective 28 March 2027: a daily service to Hartford using a Boeing 737 MAX 9, a daily service to Oklahoma City using an Embraer E175 operated by SkyWest, and a four-times-weekly service to Charleston, South Carolina, using a Boeing 737 MAX 8. Both the Hartford and Oklahoma City routes had previously been dropped, with Hartford last served until September 2018 and Oklahoma City until April 2020.
United is also adding frequency on several existing San Francisco routes from the same date: Burbank rises from 8 to 9 daily, and San Francisco to Ontario gains a sixth daily rotation. From 27 May 2027, United will add a second daily frequency to both Calgary and Sun Valley, with the Sun Valley uplift running seasonally through to 6 September 2027. Kalispell will also see United increase its San Francisco operation from up to 9 weekly flights to a full 14 weekly from 29 April 2027.
We have previously covered United's commitment to its domestic product, including the airline's expansion of economy meal pre-ordering to shorter flights, which suggests a broader push to improve the onboard offer as it grows its network.
South American Carriers Reshaping Services
AeroRoutes reports a series of changes from Avianca across its Latin American network. The airline is cancelling its Guayaquil to Miami service from 1 December 2026 and ending its Barranquilla to Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood service from 1 November 2026. On the other side of the ledger, Avianca is restoring Cali to Miami service from 17 December 2026, initially operating one daily Airbus A320, before reducing to four weekly from 2 February 2027 through to 26 March 2027.
Avianca's Guatemala City to Chicago O'Hare seasonal service, operated under the LACSA brand using an A320neo, increases from four to seven weekly flights between 2 December 2026 and 31 January 2027. These moves reflect the complexity of managing seasonal demand across a wide Latin American network.
The Bottom Line
The headline news here is straightforwardly positive for passengers on two of British Airways' most popular North American routes. A third daily Heathrow–San Francisco service from 2 May 2027 and up to 14 weekly Heathrow–Vancouver flights across peak summer 2027 represent a clear capacity commitment. The Gatwick–Vancouver seasonal daily service adds a second London point of departure for Canadian westcoast travellers.
The aircraft change on BA085/084 is worth watching, particularly for passengers who selected the A350-1000 for its cabin features. British Airways has not indicated whether the swap is temporary or reflects a longer-term fleet assignment decision, so affected passengers should monitor communications from the airline as their travel date approaches.
