Cayman Airways Named Caribbean’s Leading Airline: A Historic First
Cayman Airways has won Caribbean's Leading Airline 2026 at the World Travel Awards, on its very first nomination in the category.

Cayman Airways has won Caribbean's Leading Airline 2026 at the World Travel Awards, taking the title on its first-ever nomination in the category. The award was presented at the World Travel Awards Caribbean and The Americas Gala Ceremony in Jamaica on 11 October 2026.

The result is notable for a carrier that competes alongside far larger regional operators. According to Caribbean Today, the win came in the same cycle in which the airline also secured its first-ever nomination for World's Leading Airline 2026, placing it alongside Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways, Lufthansa, British Airways, Air New Zealand and Turkish Airlines.
What the World Travel Awards Recognition Means
The World Travel Awards are voted on by travel industry professionals and the travelling public. The organiser describes the programme as the Oscars of the travel industry, and Caribbean Today notes that the accolade represents a significant endorsement of Cayman Airways' service, reputation and standing within Caribbean aviation.
Cayman Airways is the only Caribbean-based airline nominated in the World's Leading Airline global category. That distinction alone marks a shift in how the airline is perceived beyond its home market.
Cayman Airways: A Winning Debut in the Category
Cayman Airways President and Chief Executive Officer Fabian Whorms attended the gala ceremony in Jamaica to accept the award. He was accompanied by Ivan Forbes, Vice President of Airport Passenger and Cargo Services, and Carol Nugent, Regional Airport Operations Manager for the Caribbean and Latin America.
Whorms described the recognition as a defining moment. "To be named the Caribbean's Leading Airline in our very first year of being nominated is an extraordinary honour, and one that means a great deal to all of us at Cayman Airways," he said, as Caribbean Today reports. "As a relatively small national airline competing on an international stage, this achievement is proof that our commitment to service excellence and authentic Caymanian hospitality can stand among the very best in the region."
The Global Nomination and What It Represents
On the World's Leading Airline nomination, Whorms said it is "especially meaningful for an airline of our size, and reinforces our belief that our commitment to excellence, high standards and uniquely Caymanian hospitality can earn recognition well beyond our shores."
World Travel Awards Founder Graham E. Cooke offered his own assessment. "This is a special achievement and a proud moment for the airline's team and the Cayman Islands," he said, according to Caribbean Today. "The accolade reflects the support Cayman Airways has earned among our voters and provides a platform to build on that recognition."
The Political Dimension: Tourism and National Strategy
Deputy Premier and Minister for Tourism and Trade Development Gary Rutty welcomed the result in terms that go beyond aviation. He described Cayman Airways as "a strategic national asset and an essential partner in the development and continued success of our tourism industry," adding that "international recognition of this calibre strengthens the credibility and competitiveness of the Cayman Islands as a preferred tourism destination."
The Cayman Islands rely heavily on visitor arrivals, and the airline's role in maintaining air connectivity is central to that. Rutty also noted that the global nomination gives the country another opportunity to promote itself on the world stage.
Nearly Six Decades of Service
Cayman Airways was established in 1968 and has, according to Caribbean Today, grown into an internationally recognised carrier while maintaining what it describes as a distinctly Caymanian identity. The airline has previously been named among the world's top 15 international airlines in Travel and Leisure's World's Best Awards 2024 and has earned APEX Four Star Major Airline recognition.
The gala ceremony took place in Jamaica, a destination with significant aviation infrastructure of its own. Our guide to Montego Bay Airport, Jamaica's tourist gateway, covers the airport that handles the island's largest share of international arrivals.
What to Watch Next
The World's Leading Airline vote has yet to conclude. Cayman Airways enters that ballot as the only Caribbean carrier in the field, competing against some of the highest-profile names in international aviation.

The Bottom Line
Winning Caribbean's Leading Airline on a debut nomination is a genuine achievement for a relatively small national carrier. The global nomination adds further weight to the result and puts Cayman Airways in a position it has not occupied before: discussed in the same breath as the world's biggest airlines. Whether that translates into a win at the global level remains to be determined, but the regional title alone marks a significant moment in the airline's nearly 60-year history.
