Emirates Brings A380 to Delhi and Eyes Wider India Expansion

Emirates will launch A380 services to Delhi on 25 October as it seeks to grow its product offering across India's booming travel market.

Emirates India operations are set to expand, beginning with the introduction of Airbus A380 services to Delhi (DEL) on 25 October 2026. The move underlines the airline's view that India represents one of its most important and fastest-growing markets.

The airline has been flying to India for 41 years and currently operates 167 weekly flights connecting nine Indian cities. According to CNBC TV18, those cities are Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Bengaluru and Kolkata.

Why Emirates Is Bringing the A380 to Delhi

Emirates already operates the A380 to Mumbai and Bengaluru. Delhi becomes the third Indian city to receive the type, and the airline's senior vice president for West Asia and Indian Ocean commercial operations, Essa Sulaiman Ahmad, was clear about the reasoning.

"So, definitely, it is always the right time to put the A380 on Delhi route," Ahmad said, as reported by CNBC TV18.

The A380 that will serve Delhi carries a four-class configuration: first, business, premium economy and economy. Ahmad pointed to what he described as a "premiumisation" of travel demand in the Indian market as a key driver of the decision.

Emirates operates 28 weekly flights between Delhi and Dubai, and Livemint reports that the airline offers 67,000 seats a week across its entire Indian network.

The Constraint Holding Emirates Back

Despite the strength of demand, Emirates faces a firm ceiling on how much it can grow in India. The airline is already operating at the maximum capacity permitted under its existing bilateral air services entitlements, and a new airport opening does not automatically grant additional flying rights.

"For us right now, we are running at full capacity. We are running at full capacity of our entitlement," Ahmad told reporters, according to Livemint.

Any meaningful network expansion, whether to new airports or new destinations, depends on the Indian government granting additional flying rights. Ahmad said the Indian and United Arab Emirates governments continue to discuss aviation matters, though he gave no indication of when or whether new entitlements would be agreed.

Navi Mumbai: Why Emirates Is Not in a Hurry to Move

The question of new airports is not abstract. Mumbai International Airport Ltd had proposed temporarily discontinuing 265 of the 770 weekly international departure slots at Mumbai's Terminal 2 from 25 October, as part of a plan to shift some international flights to the newly opened Adani-operated Navi Mumbai International Airport ahead of Terminal 1 redevelopment. Emirates had 10 of its 28 weekly Mumbai departure slots included in the discontinuation list.

Business Standard reports that Emirates has said Navi Mumbai airport currently lacks the catering and cargo facilities needed to support international operations.

Ahmad was pointed on the infrastructure requirements. "At an airport, you will require a facility for catering, you will require a facility for, example, for cargo warehousing," he said, as reported by Livemint. "Until it gets kind of fully built in the ecosystem, I think it's gonna be difficult for any of the airlines to shift there."

The proposed transition to Navi Mumbai has since been deferred by at least five months, giving the airport operator and airlines more time to reach an arrangement. Navi Mumbai sits roughly 50 km from the existing airport and could, Ahmad acknowledged, give airlines access to additional catchment areas including parts of the Pune region.

Three New Airports, None Served by Emirates

India has opened three new international airports in the past 12 months: Navi Mumbai, Jewar in Uttar Pradesh and Bhogapuram in Andhra Pradesh. Livemint notes that Emirates does not currently serve any of them.

The airline has been explicit that this is a regulatory matter as much as a commercial one. "Until and unless we get more additional flights, and we get additional entitlements from the government, then we will definitely look at airports, or multiple new airports that have come up," Ahmad said. Any decision to start serving a new airport would also depend on whether the necessary catering and cargo infrastructure was in place.

The Scale of Emirates India's Commitment

The numbers Ahmad cited put the relationship in perspective. Emirates has carried more than 92 million customers to and from India over 41 years of operations, and the carrier describes India as one of its most important markets.

Ahmad said demand is "extremely high" and that there is clear maturity in the Indian market. The A380's introduction on the Delhi route is, in that context, as much a statement of intent as a scheduling decision.

The Bottom Line

Emirates' India expansion story has two distinct threads. The first is the upgrade in product quality: the A380 brings more premium seats and a four-class cabin to Delhi from 25 October, following the same move already made for Mumbai and Bengaluru. The second is the structural limit on growth: without additional flying rights from the Indian government, the airline cannot add frequencies or serve any of the country's three newest international airports regardless of demand.

The Navi Mumbai situation adds a further layer of complexity, with infrastructure concerns and the bilateral entitlements question effectively putting any shift in operations on hold for the foreseeable future. What to watch is whether the India-UAE bilateral aviation talks produce new capacity, and whether Navi Mumbai develops the facilities needed to attract carriers of Emirates' scale.
