Ethiopian Airlines has filed a schedule for three-weekly service between Addis Ababa (ADD) and Atlanta (ATL) during the Northern summer 2027 season, with the westbound leg routed via Rome Fiumicino, according to AeroRoutes.

The filing covers 16 May 2027 to 1 September 2027 only. It is a seasonal schedule rather than a year-round commitment, though filings of this kind mark a serious operational step for any new service.

The Route and Its Unusual Westbound Leg

The westbound service, ET518, departs Addis Ababa at 2200 and touches down at Rome Fiumicino at 0330 the following morning. After an hour on the ground, it continues at 0430 and reaches Atlanta at 0855, also on the day after departure. AeroRoutes reports that ET518 will be operated by a Boeing 787-9.

The eastbound service tells a simpler story. ET519, operated by a Boeing 787-8, departs Atlanta at 1035 and arrives back in Addis Ababa at 0750 the following day. No intermediate stop is listed for the eastbound leg.

The Rome stop on the westbound routing is the structural detail worth noting. It gives Ethiopian a point to pick up connecting traffic from Europe, widening the commercial case for a service that covers a long transatlantic sector.

What Ethiopian Airlines Brings to Atlanta

Ethiopian Airlines is a Star Alliance member, which means Atlanta passengers could connect across a broad network of partner carriers in both directions. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta is one of North America's largest hubs, and African connectivity from that airport has been a point of competition among carriers in recent years.

The Bottom Line

A summer 2027 filing is an early signal and schedules do change before operations begin. That said, the level of detail in this filing, including specific flight numbers, aircraft types and a day-by-day operating window, points to a concrete plan rather than a placeholder.

Ethiopian Airlines has built one of Africa's largest international networks, and an Atlanta service routed through Rome would add a significant transatlantic spoke to its Star Alliance offering. For passengers in Atlanta, it would open a one-stop connection to Addis Ababa and beyond with a single carrier.

We will watch for any updates to this filing as the NS27 season approaches.
