The Etihad Airways Calgary route has launched the first-ever nonstop flights between Abu Dhabi (AUH) and Calgary (YYC), with the inaugural service, flight EY29, touching down at Calgary International Airport on Sunday, 25 October 2026.

The route is a genuine historic first. According to Aviation A2Z, no Gulf carrier has previously operated a nonstop service to Calgary, making this the first direct air link between the Gulf region and Western Canada.

What the New Etihad Airways Calgary Route Looks Like

Aviation A2Z reports that Etihad will operate the service four times a week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. The aircraft is the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, configured with Business Class and Economy Class cabins.

Calgary becomes Etihad's second Canadian destination after Toronto, and its westernmost gateway in the country. Airport representatives welcomed the inaugural aircraft with a traditional water-cannon salute, with government officials, airport authorities and tourism representatives attending the launch event.

Why Calgary and Why Now

Etihad's Chief Operations and Guest Officer, Captain Majed Al Marzouqi, described the Calgary launch as an important milestone in the airline's Canadian expansion. Aviation A2Z reports that he highlighted Canada's importance to the carrier and pointed to opportunities in Calgary's tourism and energy sectors. He also noted that the route would improve access to India and the wider Indian subcontinent through Abu Dhabi.

Chief Executive Officer Antonoaldo Neves linked the launch to Etihad's continued investment in its network, fleet and passenger experience. He said the new connection would establish stronger links between Western Canada, Abu Dhabi and destinations across the airline's global network.

The new service fits a pattern of Etihad expanding into new long-haul markets. Earlier this week, we covered the airline's first-ever nonstop service between Abu Dhabi and Luxembourg, another route opening a brand-new city pair for the carrier.

Connecting Western Canada to the World

The route's value extends well beyond point-to-point travel between Calgary and the UAE. Aviation A2Z notes that passengers departing Calgary will gain direct access to Abu Dhabi and onward connections to destinations across the Gulf Cooperation Council, Africa, India, Pakistan and other parts of Asia through a single connection.

Previously, travellers between Calgary and these destinations were required to connect through another international hub. The new service removes that step for a significant number of itineraries.

Etihad also offers a stopover programme that allows eligible travellers to explore Abu Dhabi during their journey, which the airline suggests could encourage Canadian visitors to spend additional time in the UAE capital before continuing to their onward destination.

What It Means for Alberta

Alberta's government has welcomed the new service. Joseph Schow, Alberta's Minister of Jobs, Economy, Trade and Immigration, said the route reflected the province's growing international connections and pointed to recent trade missions and commercial momentum as signs of increased interest in Alberta's economy, according to Aviation A2Z.

Alberta has a major energy sector alongside businesses involved in innovation and other industries. Direct connectivity to Abu Dhabi gives companies in both regions an additional travel option for exploring partnerships, investment and commercial relationships.

Tourism in Both Directions

Calgary serves as a gateway to the Canadian Rockies, including Banff National Park and Jasper National Park. Aviation A2Z notes that the region's mountain scenery, hiking trails, lakes and winter sports destinations give tourism operators a strong proposition to market to travellers from the UAE and the wider Etihad network.

In the other direction, Canadian travellers gain convenient access to Abu Dhabi's cultural attractions, including Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Saadiyat Island and Yas Island. The two-way tourism potential was cited by both the airline and Alberta's government as a core argument for the route.

Could Flights Increase?

Captain Al Marzouqi indicated that Etihad initially plans to operate four weekly flights, with the possibility of increasing frequency to daily services depending on passenger demand, according to Aviation A2Z. Whether that threshold is reached will depend on how quickly the route builds a loyal traveller base on both sides of the route.

The Bottom Line

Etihad's Abu Dhabi to Calgary service is a genuine first for Gulf aviation and a significant expansion of long-haul connectivity for Western Canada. With a strong connecting hub in Abu Dhabi, demand from the South Asian diaspora community in Canada, and Alberta's growing international commercial profile, the route has a credible commercial case. The question of whether four weekly flights eventually become seven is one to watch over the coming months.
