In the last hour or so, it has been revealed that Glasgow & Edinburgh Airport are experiencing fuel supply issues.

Aviation News UK took to X this evening to report that both Glasgow and Edinburgh airports are currently experiencing fuel supply issues for reasons that remain unknown at this stage.

The account, which closely monitors UK aviation operations, noted that several airlines have already begun uplifting additional fuel at other destinations ahead of arriving in Scotland.

According to the tweet, TUI flights departing Glasgow are being routed via Prestwick Airport (PIK) to take on fuel before continuing to their final destinations.

Meanwhile, Emirates’ Edinburgh to Dubai service will make an unscheduled stop in Manchester this evening, and Air France’s Edinburgh to Paris route will also divert through Manchester.

The report adds that further delays remain possible across both airports as the situation continues to develop.

What This Means Currently For Edinburgh & Glasgow…

The immediate picture for passengers travelling through Glasgow or Edinburgh today is one of uncertainty and added journey time.

Unscheduled technical stops, such as those now affecting the Emirates Dubai service and the Air France Paris flight, add considerable time onto what are ordinarily straightforward journeys.

For passengers on TUI flights out of Glasgow, the diversion through Prestwick will cause noticeable delays before they even reach their holiday destination.

It is worth noting that Scotland’s main airports are not connected to the Exolum pipeline network that feeds major English airports such as Heathrow and Gatwick.

Glasgow and Edinburgh are instead reliant on road tanker deliveries of jet fuel, making them considerably more vulnerable when supply chains encounter problems.

This structural reality means disruptions at Scottish airports can escalate quickly and unpredictably.

Will the Disruption Be Widespread in the Days Ahead?

The honest answer at this stage is that it is too early to say with any certainty.

The cause of the supply issues has not yet been confirmed, which makes it difficult to judge how long the situation will persist.

What is clear is that this incident arrives against a backdrop of already heightened pressure on European jet fuel supplies, with costs elevated significantly following global supply tensions earlier in 2026.

If the root cause is identified and resolved swiftly, the disruption may be contained to today.

However, if a deeper supply or infrastructure problem is at play, passengers travelling through both airports in the coming days should monitor their airline’s communications closely and check in ahead of travel.
