Gulf Air Launches Singapore to Kuala Lumpur Fifth Freedom Flights
Gulf Air will operate daily Boeing 787-9 flights between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur from 26 October 2026, with fifth freedom rights allowing point-to-point bookings.

Gulf Air will begin daily fifth freedom flights between Singapore Changi (SIN) and Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) from 26 October 2026, operated by its Boeing 787-9 fleet. Fares are already on sale, with round-trip Economy tickets starting from S$246 for travel in November.

Mainlymiles reports that the new service is an extension of Gulf Air's existing daily Bahrain to Singapore operation rather than a standalone route. Bahrain's national carrier returns to Kuala Lumpur as a permanent fixture having last served the city in March 2012.
How the Route Works
Gulf Air's daily GF165 service will continue beyond Singapore to Kuala Lumpur, then return to Changi as GF166 before heading back to Bahrain. Because the airline holds fifth freedom traffic rights on the short hop, passengers can buy a ticket solely between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur without travelling to or from Bahrain at all.
The scheduled block time in each direction is 1 hour 10 minutes. GF165 departs Singapore at 2.20pm and arrives into KUL at 3.30pm. The return, GF166, leaves Kuala Lumpur at 5.35pm and lands at Changi at 6.45pm, before the aircraft continues to Bahrain at 8.00pm.
As mainlymiles notes, the turnaround in Kuala Lumpur is just over two hours, so a day trip is not possible. The schedule does, however, suit a long weekend, with a post-lunch departure northbound and an early-evening return.
Gulf Air Returns to Kuala Lumpur
This is not Gulf Air's first attempt at re-entering the Kuala Lumpur market since its 2012 exit. The airline had planned a comeback with daily Boeing 787-9 flights from July 2020, but the pandemic ended those plans before they began.
According to mainlymiles, Gulf Air eventually returned to KUL on 30 September 2026, initially operating non-stop Bahrain to Kuala Lumpur flights timed around the Formula 1 race weekend. The Bahrain Grand Prix was moved to Malaysia's Sepang circuit this year and branded the "Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia", running from 2 to 4 October. Those non-stop flights run up to five times weekly before dropping to three per week from 8 October, until 23 October, at which point the daily routing via Singapore takes over as the permanent arrangement.
Gulf Air has loaded these flights through to 1 September 2027, which mainlymiles says reflects the airline's standard 330-day advance sales window rather than a fixed end date, confirming this as a year-round operation.
A Busy Corridor Gets Busier
Singapore to Kuala Lumpur is one of the world's busiest air corridors. According to mainlymiles, up to 34 daily flights in each direction are already operated between Changi and KUL, with Gulf Air set to add a 35th option. It will be only the second carrier on the route with fifth freedom rights, joining Ethiopian Airlines.
Separately, Scoot and Batik Air Malaysia each offer a pair of daily flights between Changi and Subang, Kuala Lumpur's smaller city-centre airport, while Firefly operates six daily flights between Seletar and Subang.
For passengers in Kuala Lumpur, the new service also provides a daily one-stop connection to Bahrain and Gulf Air's wider network, including late-night onward connections to Europe through Bahrain, which mainlymiles says the 11.25pm Bahrain arrival time serves well.
The Business Class Product on a 70-Minute Flight
Gulf Air operates its Boeing 787-9 in a 282-seat configuration. Business Class, branded Falcon Gold, uses the Apex Suite in a staggered 2-2-2 layout. The staggered arrangement gives window-seat passengers direct aisle access, addressing the main drawback of older 2-2-2 configurations. The same product is used by Oman Air and Japan Airlines.
Gulf Air's 787-9 flights also feature a dedicated Sky Chef for food and beverage service, and all Boeing 787 aircraft in the fleet are Wi-Fi equipped, as are the carrier's Airbus A320neo and Airbus A321neo aircraft.
Economy Class seats are arranged in a 3-3-3 layout with a 32-inch pitch and 11.6-inch seat-back screens with on-demand entertainment.

What the Fares Look Like
Round-trip fares from Singapore for travel in November 2026 start from S$246 in Economy and S$1,025 in Business Class, according to mainlymiles. In a sample week in mid-November, the cheapest outbound Economy Light fares were priced at S$143 from Monday to Thursday, rising to S$238 from Friday to Sunday.
Even the cheapest Economy Light fare includes a 25kg checked baggage allowance and 6kg of carry-on. Seat selection is chargeable, date changes cost US$100, and cancellations cost US$170. Passengers earn 50 per cent of the usual Falconflyer miles on this fare type.
The Bottom Line
Gulf Air's Singapore to Kuala Lumpur launch makes commercial sense on several levels. It keeps the Boeing 787-9 productive during what was previously a long Changi layover, adds fifth freedom revenue on one of Asia's most-travelled short-haul corridors, and gives Kuala Lumpur passengers a one-stop path into Bahrain and beyond. With tickets already on sale and inventory loaded to September 2027, Gulf Air is treating this as a permanent fixture from day one.
The route also marks the airline's second stint of intra-Asia fifth freedom flying from Changi, having previously sold tickets on the Singapore to Bangkok leg before that tag ended in October 2024. Whether passenger demand on the 70-minute hop justifies a full long-haul widebody is a question the next twelve months will answer.
