The incident forced the crew of the four-month-old Airbus A321neo, registered VT-NOE, to change course mid-flight and land at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad (HYD), rather than continue to Chennai International Airport (MAA).

What Happened on IndiGo Flight 6E 6115

CNBCTV18 reports that smoke was detected coming from a customer's personal electronic device stored in the overhead bin. The cabin crew responded promptly and brought the situation under control.

In its statement, IndiGo confirmed: "The cabin crew responded promptly and the situation was brought under control." The pilots then diverted the aircraft in line with established protocols.

Aviation A2Z notes that flight tracking data identified the aircraft as an Airbus A321neo powered by two CFM LEAP-1A engines. The airline did not identify the specific device involved or provide further details about what caused it to emit smoke.

The Landing at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport

The aircraft landed safely at Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. An official at the airport confirmed the outcome to Zee News: "All passengers have been evacuated safely. They will be accommodated on the next available flight by the airline to their destination."

IndiGo confirmed the safe landing in its public statement, adding that the diversion was carried out in line with established aviation safety protocols.

How IndiGo Handled the Aftermath

The airline arranged an alternative aircraft to carry affected passengers onward to Chennai. Zee News reports that refreshments and regular updates were provided to passengers during the disruption.

IndiGo's spokesperson said: "We regret the inconvenience caused to our customers due to this unforeseen situation and are making all efforts to minimise it, including offering refreshments and sharing timely updates. At IndiGo, the safety of our customers and crew remains our top priority."

Aviation A2Z reports that the airline did not provide a confirmed timeline for when the replacement aircraft would depart Hyderabad for Chennai.

Why Powerbank Incidents Matter in Aviation

Personal electronic devices, particularly lithium-ion power banks, are a known fire risk on board aircraft. Thermal runaway in lithium-ion cells can produce heat and smoke rapidly, which is why aviation authorities require such devices to be carried in the cabin rather than in the hold, so crew can intervene quickly.

The prompt response by IndiGo's cabin crew in bringing the situation under control before landing is consistent with standard emergency procedures for in-cabin smoke events.

IndiGo's Recent Expansion

This incident comes as IndiGo continues to grow its network. We recently covered IndiGo's launch of daily Kolkata to Shanghai flights, which marked a significant step in the airline's international ambitions.

The carrier's rapid fleet growth makes incidents such as this a test of its operational procedures, and on this occasion the airline's crew and protocols appear to have performed as intended.

The Bottom Line

IndiGo flight 6E 6115 landed safely at Hyderabad after the cabin crew dealt with a smoke-emitting passenger device on 11 October 2026. Passengers were evacuated safely and an alternative aircraft was arranged for the onward journey to Chennai.

No injuries have been reported. The full details of the incident, including the number of passengers on board, have not been released by the airline.
