Leeds Bradford Airport Opens New Security Zone to Double Capacity
Leeds Bradford Airport has opened a new Central Search Zone featuring advanced screening technology that will double its security capacity.

Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) has opened a new Central Search Zone designed to significantly cut passenger waiting times, with each lane now capable of processing up to 600 passengers per hour compared with approximately 350 previously.

The upgrade forms part of the airport's wider LBA:REGEN programme, which aims to modernise infrastructure and improve the overall passenger experience across Yorkshire and the North of England.
What the New Central Search Zone Includes
According to the Telegraph and Argus, the facility uses next-generation Leidos screening equipment and Rohde and Schwarz body scanners. These allow passengers to leave electronics and liquids under 100ml inside their bags during the screening process, removing the need to unpack items separately.
The zone also features dynamic virtual queue management, enabling staff to monitor and actively manage passenger flow during busy periods. Six eGates for boarding card scanning help move passengers efficiently into the security search area.
Dedicated routes have been introduced for passengers requiring special assistance as well as Fast Track customers, according to the BBC.
How Much Extra Capacity Is Being Added
From October, three new extra-long security lanes are in operation. The Telegraph and Argus reports that a further two lanes will open before the end of the year. Once all five are fully operational, the new system will double the airport's current security screening capacity.
The BBC notes that individual lanes are now capable of processing up to 600 passengers per hour, compared with approximately 350 previously, meaning almost double the number of passengers can be screened each hour.
What Else Has Changed in the Terminal
Beyond the security lanes themselves, the Central Search Zone has been designed as a brighter and more open environment. The Telegraph and Argus reports that travellers will also gain access to new escalators leading directly to World Duty Free.
The retailer's new first-in-flow store will cover more than 1,000 square metres, roughly double the size of the current outlet, and will introduce new brands including Charlotte Tilbury.
What the Airport's Chief Executive Said
Vincent Hodder, chief executive of Leeds Bradford Airport, called the opening a landmark moment. "The opening of our new Central Search Zone is a landmark moment for Leeds Bradford Airport and a major milestone in the delivery of our LBA:REGEN programme," he said, as quoted by the Telegraph and Argus.
"This is a truly transformational investment that will significantly enhance the passenger experience. Not only are we increasing capacity, but we're introducing some of the most advanced security processing technology available at any UK regional airport."
Hodder added, via the BBC, that passengers will "spend less time queuing and more time enjoying our terminal facilities before departure."
Why Leeds Bradford Airport Security Matters for the Region
Airport officials say millions of passengers are expected to benefit from the improvements every year, according to the Telegraph and Argus. LBA is the primary airport serving Yorkshire, and the expansion is intended to support future growth in the region.
The project sits within a broader long-term strategy to position Leeds Bradford among the leading UK regional airports for security technology, a goal Hodder's team has been building towards through the LBA:REGEN programme.

The Bottom Line
Leeds Bradford Airport's new Central Search Zone represents a meaningful step forward in regional airport infrastructure. The combination of advanced screening equipment, virtual queue management and increased lane capacity addresses one of the most common passenger frustrations at busy airports.
With two further lanes still to open before the end of the year, the full picture of what this investment delivers will become clearer in the months ahead. Airport officials say the improvements are among the most significant to passenger facilities at LBA in recent years, placing it alongside larger UK regional airports for security technology.
