London Luton Airport has completed a transformative £18 million runway resurfacing programme, marking one of the most significant airfield engineering projects in its recent history.

The upgrade enhances the durability and performance of the 2.16km runway, ensuring the airport continues to meet stringent regulatory and safety standards while supporting long term operational resilience.

Delivering a Once in a Generation Project for London Luton Airport

The scale and complexity of the works required meticulous planning and a tightly coordinated delivery model.

Over five months, a 120 strong team of resurfacing specialists worked exclusively during overnight closures, beginning at 00:01 and handing back the runway at 05:45 ahead of the first departure each morning.

Each shift involved more than 120 pieces of plant and vehicles, supported by airfield operations, Air Traffic Control, engineering, health and safety, and security teams to minimise disruption to passengers and airlines.

Marc Wolman, Infrastructure Director at London Luton Airport, described the programme as “an immense, once in a generation project – the airport’s largest airfield engineering programme in two decades.”

He emphasised the airport’s success in delivering the project “safely, on time, on budget and with minimal impact on airfield operations or our neighbouring communities,” adding that the new runway now provides “peak condition” infrastructure for millions of travellers each year.

The resurfacing formed part of a wider package of airfield enhancements designed to modernise the airport’s operational capability.

Works included a taxiway extension, the replacement of more than 1,000 halogen runway lights with energy efficient LED units, and the installation of a new weather sensor to improve forecasting accuracy.

These upgrades strengthen the airport’s ability to operate reliably in varying conditions while supporting its broader sustainability ambitions.

A Collaborative Approach to Complex Delivery

Lagan Aviation and Infrastructure served as the principal contractor, bringing extensive experience from previous projects at Luton, including the last runway refurbishment in 2006.

Project Manager Brandi Davey highlighted the scale of the undertaking, noting that the team delivered more than 130,000 hours of work and replaced 30,000 tonnes of asphalt while upgrading over 1,000 lights to LED.

She credited the success of the programme to a shared goal and collaborative approach between LLA, Lagan, and the airport’s shareholders, AENA and Infrabridge.

With the resurfacing now complete, London Luton Airport has reinforced a critical piece of infrastructure that underpins its growth trajectory.

The project ensures the airport is equipped to maintain safe, efficient operations while supporting future passenger demand.

As LLA continues to invest in its airfield and terminal facilities, the runway upgrade stands as a cornerstone of its long term strategy to deliver a reliable, passenger focused experience.
