Lufthansa to Launch Columbus’s First Nonstop Europe Flights in 2027

Lufthansa will begin three-times-weekly nonstop flights between Frankfurt and Columbus, Ohio, from May 2027, giving the city its first-ever transatlantic service.

Lufthansa will give Columbus, Ohio, its first nonstop European service from 5 May 2027, operating three flights a week between Frankfurt (FRA) and Columbus (CMH) aboard a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. Tickets go on sale from 20 October 2026, according to One Mile at a Time.

The route closes a long-standing gap in Columbus's international network. As One Mile at a Time notes, the airport's only other international services are Air Canada connections to Toronto (YYZ) and Montreal (YUL), plus seasonal leisure flights to Cancun (CUN) on American, Southwest and Viva.

The Lufthansa Columbus Schedule

According to One Mile at a Time, flights will operate on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays in both directions. LH406 departs Frankfurt at 11:15 local time and arrives in Columbus at 14:00 local time. LH407 departs Columbus at 16:20 local time and arrives in Frankfurt at 06:15 the following morning.

The 4,248-mile route is blocked at 8 hours 45 minutes westbound and 7 hours 55 minutes eastbound, as reported by One Mile at a Time.

What the Boeing 787-9 Will Offer

The aircraft on the route is a 287-seat Boeing 787-9 fitted with Lufthansa's new Allegris cabin. One Mile at a Time reports the configuration comprises 28 business class seats, 28 premium economy seats and 231 economy seats.

The $46.9 Million Incentive Programme

The route would not be launching without substantial financial backing. One Mile at a Time reports that a $46.9 million airline incentive programme is underpinning the service, making the risk profile for Lufthansa considerably more attractive than a purely commercial launch would.

Business Traveller notes that German investment in the region and the connectivity that Frankfurt's hub provides are part of the rationale. One Mile at a Time also highlights that 38 German-based companies operate in the Columbus region, which strengthens the case for Lufthansa specifically to be the carrier to open the route.

What the Airlines and Airport Are Saying

Dirk Janzen, VP of Lufthansa Passenger Sales for the Americas, described the launch as a significant step in the airline's US expansion. "The new service will provide both business and leisure travelers with a convenient nonstop connection to Germany, as well as onward destinations across our Lufthansa Group network," he said, according to One Mile at a Time. "The launch of this route is an important step in our continued expansion in the United States, our most important market outside the Lufthansa Group's home markets."

Daren Griffin, President of the Columbus Regional Airport Authority, called it a milestone for the region. "Lufthansa's new nonstop service to Frankfurt provides our passengers with a direct link to one of the world's strongest global networks, enhancing connectivity, competitiveness and continued growth," he said, as quoted by One Mile at a Time.

Why Frankfurt Works as a Hub for Ohio Travellers

Frankfurt is one of Europe's busiest connecting hubs, and Lufthansa's position there means Columbus passengers will have onward access to a wide range of European destinations. Business Traveller points to those onward connections as a key part of the route's commercial logic alongside the local German business community.

It is worth noting that Lufthansa is not the only major European carrier expanding its ambitions on the continent. We recently covered how Iberia is approaching its 100th anniversary and the long history behind European long-haul aviation, which gives useful context to how flag carriers have built their transatlantic networks over decades.

The Bottom Line

The Lufthansa Columbus route is a genuine first for Ohio's capital and reflects a growing trend of airlines, supported by local incentive programmes, extending long-haul service to secondary US cities. The $46.9 million revenue guarantee programme, as highlighted by One Mile at a Time, significantly reduces the commercial risk for Lufthansa and makes the 5 May 2027 launch date credible.

Whether the route can sustain itself beyond any incentive period will be the real test for Columbus as a transatlantic market. For now, the city has its first nonstop link to Europe, and Ohio travellers have a new option that did not exist before.
