The incident adds to a difficult recent period for the carrier, which has featured in our coverage of a nose gear collapse at Frankfurt and an inflight emergency on a Frankfurt to Lisbon service. This story sits in a different category entirely, but it will draw scrutiny to the airline's crew accommodation arrangements.

What Happened at the Conrad Bengaluru Pool

According to Aviation A2Z and Simple Flying, the deceased Lufthansa crew member was Alexander Maximilian Theiss, 57, a German national. He was brought to Manipal Hospitals dead on arrival. The second person who died was Juraj Horvat, 45, a Slovak national and IBM project manager. Horvat received CPR at Manipal Hospitals but could not be revived and was declared dead there.

Two others entered the water in an attempt to help the stricken men. Aviation A2Z and Simple Flying identify them as Matthew Desantis, 41, a US national, and Rahul Tiwari, 28, an Indian pool attendant and lifeguard. Both were treated at Manipal Hospitals; their conditions were described as stable and non-life-threatening.

Suspected Cause and Preliminary Findings

Suspected electrical leakage is the preliminary cause of the deaths, though authorities have not officially confirmed this. Aviation A2Z reports that Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh said preliminary findings pointed to suspected electrical leakage at the pool.

A joint technical investigation is now under way. Aviation A2Z reports that officials from BESCOM and BWSSB are examining the pool's electrical installations, and that investigators are inspecting the pump system, underwater lighting and earthing connections. No official determination of cause has been made.

A police complaint was filed by the wife of one of the deceased, identified as Silvia Ottawa, alleging inadequate pool maintenance and safety arrangements, according to Aviation A2Z and Simple Flying.

The Hotel and Its Response

The Conrad Bengaluru is a five-star property operated under Hilton's portfolio, located in the Halasuru and Ulsoor area of the city, according to Aviation A2Z and Simple Flying. Following the incident, the hotel closed its outdoor swimming pool. Aviation A2Z and Simple Flying report that the pool is listed as closed for maintenance from 31 October through 30 November 2026.

Lufthansa's Bengaluru Operations

Theiss was in Bengaluru on a standard crew layover, according to Aviation A2Z and Simple Flying. Simple Flying reports that Lufthansa operates nonstop flights to Bengaluru (BLR) from both Frankfurt (FRA) and Munich (MUC). Crew layovers in Bengaluru are therefore a routine part of the airline's operations on those routes.

The Bottom Line

Two people are dead and two others were injured following an incident at a hotel pool used by a Lufthansa crew on layover. The preliminary focus of investigators is on the pool's electrical systems, but no official cause has been established. The police complaint filed by a relative of one of the deceased means this is now a legal matter as well as a technical one, and the Conrad Bengaluru faces serious questions about its maintenance and safety standards.
