What Has Happened on the M56

According to National Highways, the motorway is shut in both directions between junction 2 at Sharston and junction 5 at Manchester Airport. The closure was in place by Saturday evening and remains active.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed that officers and paramedics have been sent to the scene, prompting the full bidirectional closure. The Manchester Evening News reports that the North West Ambulance Service is also in attendance.

The Scale of Disruption

Motorists have reported being stuck inside the closure for more than 90 minutes, with queues building on both the M56 and the M60 in either direction.

Police have also been seen on local roads close to the M56, suggesting the response extends beyond the motorway itself.

Diversions in Place

The Mirror reports that National Highways has put diversions in place for both westbound and eastbound traffic, marked with symbols on road signs. Drivers are advised to follow the solid circle symbol for westbound diversions and the solid triangle symbol for eastbound diversions.

What This Means for M56 Manchester Airport Access

The M56 is the principal road link between central Manchester and Manchester Airport (MAN), and a closure between junctions 2 and 5 cuts the main approach to the terminal area entirely. We have previously reported on the significant volumes of road traffic the airport generates, including why September is the busiest month for cars at Manchester Airport.

Passengers travelling to or from the airport on Saturday evening should allow considerably more time and check live traffic conditions before setting out.

The Bottom Line

A serious collision has prompted a full closure of the M56 near Manchester Airport, with police and ambulance crews on scene and significant queues forming in both directions. The situation is developing, and no further detail has been confirmed by Greater Manchester Police at the time of writing.
