Mirage 2000D Crashes Near Nancy: One Dead, One Missing
A French Air and Space Force Mirage 2000D has crashed near Rogéville in north-eastern France, killing at least one crew member.

A French Air and Space Force Mirage 2000D crashed near Rogéville in north-eastern France at approximately 22:40 local time on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, killing at least one of its two crew members. Search operations continued into Wednesday morning for the second occupant.

The aircraft belonged to Fighter Squadron 2/3 "Champagne", based at Nancy-Ochey Air Base (BA 133), and was returning from a mission when contact was lost. Aviation24.be reports that radio and radar contact were lost during the return to base.
What Happened on the Night of 20 October
The wreckage came down in an area between Rogéville, Domèvre-en-Haye and Tremblecourt, roughly 20 kilometres (12 miles) northwest of Nancy, according to AeroTime. Henry Lemoine, mayor of Pont-à-Mousson, announced the crash on Facebook and said debris had been located using a drone.
Local residents reported hearing a loud explosion and seeing a fireball in the sky. Emergency responders included civilian firefighters from the Meurthe-et-Moselle department, military firefighters from Nancy-Ochey, gendarmerie personnel and a search helicopter.
What the French Ministry of the Armed Forces Has Confirmed
In a statement issued on 21 October 2026, the French Ministry of the Armed Forces confirmed the type as a Mirage 2000D from Fighter Squadron 2/3 "Champagne". AeroTime reports that one body had been recovered but was awaiting formal identification, and that search operations were continuing for the second crew member.
Aviation24.be reports that air force spokesman Colonel David Pappalardo confirmed the aircraft was conducting a routine training mission and was not carrying weapons. Authorities have not confirmed whether either crew member successfully ejected.
The Two Crew Members Aboard
The crew comprised a fighter pilot and a weapons systems officer, referred to in French military terminology as a NOSA. Aviation24.be reports that, according to Colonel Pappalardo's account as reported by L'Est Républicain, the pilot was young and undergoing training, while the navigator and weapons systems officer was experienced.
About the Mirage 2000D and Nancy-Ochey
The Mirage 2000D is a two-seat strike aircraft designed for day and night ground-attack operations. Nancy-Ochey Air Base is home to the French Air and Space Force's 3rd Fighter Wing, which operates the type.
France recently completed a mid-life renovation programme for the fleet. AeroTime reports that on 16 June 2026, France's Directorate General for Armament delivered the 50th and final upgraded Mirage 2000D, with the programme intended to extend operational service beyond 2030. Aviation24.be notes that the mid-life upgrade entered operational service at Nancy-Ochey in April 2025, though information released about Tuesday's crash does not establish whether the aircraft involved was an upgraded example.

Previous Accidents Involving the Type
This is not the first fatal accident involving a Mirage 2000D from Nancy-Ochey. AeroTime reports that on 9 January 2019, a Mirage 2000D from the base crashed near Mignovillard in the Jura mountains during a low-altitude training flight, killing both crew members.
More recently, on 14 August 2024, two Rafale fighters from Saint-Dizier collided during an air combat training exercise near Colombey-les-Belles in Meurthe-et-Moselle, killing two aircrew. France's State Aviation Safety Investigation Bureau (BEA-É) published its investigation report into that collision on 10 June 2026, finding that simultaneous and opposing control inputs from the instructor and trainee aboard one aircraft temporarily prevented a coordinated evasive manoeuvre, according to AeroTime.
Investigations Now Under Way
The French Ministry of the Armed Forces has confirmed that separate aviation safety and judicial investigations have been opened. No cause has been established by any authority at this stage.
Our Squawk 7700 hub carries the latest on this and other military and civil aviation accidents and emergencies as they develop.
The Bottom Line
The loss of a Mirage 2000D from Nancy-Ochey, with one crew member confirmed dead and another still missing, is a serious blow to the French Air and Space Force. The aircraft was returning from what the military describes as a routine training mission, with no weapons aboard. Both the safety and judicial investigations are in their earliest stages, and no authority has yet indicated what may have caused the crash.
We will update our coverage as the French Ministry of the Armed Forces or investigators release further information.
