A person walking on a runway at Denver International Airport was hit by a Frontier Airlines flight on the takeoff roll.

A Frontier Airlines Airbus A321-200N, registration N646FR, operating flight F9-4345 from Denver to Los Angeles, was accelerating for takeoff from Denver International Airport’s runway 17L late on May 8, 2026, when the crew rejected the takeoff at high speed after striking a pedestrian on the runway.

The aircraft, carrying 224 passengers and seven crew members, was travelling at approximately 120 knots when the collision occurred.

The crew reported an engine fire and smoke in the cabin, prompting an immediate evacuation via slides.

Emergency services responded quickly, extinguishing the fire in one of the aircraft’s Pratt & Whitney PW1133G engines.

All passengers and crew were safely evacuated, though the pedestrian tragically did not survive.

Denver Fire Department units transported passengers to the terminal while investigators secured the scene.

Official Statements Following Denver Accident

Denver Airport confirmed the incident occurred at approximately 11:19 p.m. local time, noting that emergency response and investigation were underway.

The airport stated that runway 17L would remain closed pending the National Transportation Safety Board’s investigation.

“Frontier Flight 4345 reported striking a pedestrian during takeoff at DEN at approximately 11:19 p.m. on Friday, May 8, 2026. There was a brief engine fire that was promptly extinguished by the Denver Fire Dept.”

“Emergency crews responded to the scene and bussed passengers to the terminal. 231 souls were on board. Emergency response and investigation are ongoing,” the airport said.

Frontier Airlines released its own statement expressing deep sadness over the event:

“As flight 4345 was departing this evening from Denver International Airport to Los Angeles International Airport, the aircraft reportedly struck a pedestrian on the runway during takeoff.”

“Smoke was reported in the cabin and the pilots aborted takeoff. Passengers were then safely evacuated via slides as a matter of precaution.”

“We are investigating this incident and gathering more information in coordination with the airport and other safety authorities. We are deeply saddened by this event.”

The aircraft involved, an Airbus A321-271NX registered N646FR, is a relatively new addition to Frontier’s fleet.

Built in April 2024 and delivered later that month, it is powered by two Pratt & Whitney PW1133G-JM engines and configured for 240 passengers.

The aircraft, named Cedar the Florida Scrub Jay, was leased from AviLease and entered service on April 29, 2024. According to fleet records, it was parked at Denver following the incident.

Investigation and Safety Concerns

Local reports suggest a possible breach in the airport’s east perimeter fence, which may have allowed the pedestrian to access the runway area.

Airport security inspected the fence the following morning, though officials have not confirmed whether this was directly related to the event.

The NTSB and FAA are expected to examine how an individual gained access to an active runway and assess the effectiveness of airport perimeter security measures.

The incident raises serious questions about airfield safety and surveillance protocols at major U.S. airports.

As investigations continue, Frontier Airlines and Denver International Airport face scrutiny over procedural safeguards and coordination between ground security and air operations.

The event underscores the importance of maintaining strict perimeter integrity and rapid response capabilities to prevent future tragedies.
