Photo License Terms

In short

Every photo on The Aviation Hub is sold under one editorial licence. You can use it in one piece of editorial work, at any size, and keep that piece online for as long as you like. You cannot use it in advertising, on merchandise, or sell it on. The photographer keeps the copyright and must be credited. Prices are in pounds sterling and exclude VAT. Files are delivered as a download; once you download, the sale is final.

1. Who we are and what these terms cover

1.1 “We”, “us” and “The Aviation Hub” mean James Field trading as The Aviation Hub, contact james.field@theaviationhub.co.uk. “You” means the person or organisation buying a licence, a pack or a plan.

1.2 These terms apply to every photo licensed through theaviationhub.co.uk, whether bought singly, with pack credits, under a monthly or annual plan, or through a team seat on a plan. They are the whole agreement between you and us for those photos.

1.3 Photos are supplied by The Aviation Hub and by independent photographers who have licensed them to us for this purpose. Each photographer keeps the copyright in their work. We grant you the licence below on their behalf and ours.

1.4 If you buy on behalf of an organisation, you confirm you are allowed to bind it, and “you” includes that organisation.

1.5 Photographers who send us photos are covered by the separate Photo Contributor Agreement, not by these terms.

2. The editorial licence: what you may do

2.1 When you buy a single photo, use a pack credit, or download under a plan, we grant you a non-exclusive, non-transferable, worldwide licence to use that photo in one editorial piece.

2.2 An editorial piece is one of: a news article, feature, blog post or newsletter; an item on a social media account that belongs to the piece’s publisher; an episode of a podcast or video programme (as a still); a page of a book, magazine, report or educational material; a presentation, lecture or lesson. The piece must be about something — the aircraft, airline, airport, event or subject matter the photo shows or illustrates — rather than an advertisement for a product or service.

2.3 Within that piece you may use the photo at any size, crop it, adjust tone and colour, and place text over it, provided the result does not misrepresent what the photo shows or remove the credit.

2.4 The piece may stay published for as long as you like, in every format and territory it appears in, including archives, syndication of that same piece, and reprints of that same piece. A new piece needs a new licence.

2.5 The licence belongs to the buyer named at checkout (or the organisation they bought for). It covers your staff and contractors working on that piece. It does not extend to a client, a sister publication or another company unless we agree in writing.

2.6 Under a plan, every photo you download during a paid period is licensed on the terms above. The licence survives the end of the plan; you do not lose the right to keep using pieces already published.

2.7 Downloading a photo you have already licensed, to replace a lost file, is free and does not create a second licence or use a further credit.

3. What you may not do

3.1 You may not use a photo:

  • in advertising or marketing for a product, service, event or organisation, including sponsored content and advertorials;
  • on merchandise or physical products for sale (prints, posters, calendars, clothing, mugs and the like);
  • as, or as part of, a logo, brand mark or trade dress;
  • in a template, app, website theme, stock library or dataset, or anywhere it could be extracted and reused by others;
  • to train, fine-tune or evaluate a machine-learning or generative AI model;
  • in a way that is defamatory, misleading or unlawful, or that presents the subject in a false light (for example, implying an aircraft shown was involved in an incident it was not);
  • in pornographic, hateful or discriminatory material.

3.2 You may not sell, lend, sub-license or give the file to anyone outside the piece it was licensed for, or share your plan sign-in with people who are not on your team seats.

3.3 You may not remove or alter the credit metadata written into the file, or the credit shown with the piece.

3.4 Commercial and print licences are not sold on the site at present. If you need one, email us with the photo code and the use, and we will quote. Nothing in these terms grants those rights.

3.5 If you use a photo outside this licence, we may invoice you our standard commercial rate for that use, without prejudice to the photographer’s other rights.

4. Credit

4.1 Every use must carry the credit shown on the photo’s page, in the form “[Photographer name] / The Aviation Hub”. Put it where your publication normally credits pictures: a caption, a byline under the image, or an image credits list for the piece.

4.2 Where the format has no room for a visible credit (a social media image, a video still), include it in the post text or description.

4.3 The credit is also written into the file’s metadata when we deliver it. Please keep it there.

4.4 A missing credit is a breach of the licence. If we or the photographer point one out, adding it within seven days puts things right; if it is not added, clause 3.5 applies.

5. Buying: single photos, packs, plans and team seats

5.1 Prices are shown on the Photos page in pounds sterling and exclude VAT, which is added at checkout where it applies. Payment is taken by card through Stripe; we never see your card details.

WhatPriceWhat you get
Single photo£30One photo, one editorial licence, sent by download link
5 pack£1255 credits, each good for one photo, valid 12 months
10 pack£22010 credits, valid 12 months
15 pack£30015 credits, valid 12 months
Editorial plan£59 a month or £590 a year10 photos each month
Newsroom plan£119 a month or £1,190 a year25 photos each month, up to 5 team seats

5.2 Packs. Credits are added to your account when payment clears and expire 12 months after purchase. Unused credits are not refunded or extended. A credit is used when you download a photo for the first time; downloading it again later is free.

5.3 Plans. A plan renews automatically each month (or each year) until you cancel. Each monthly allowance resets on the renewal date; unused downloads do not carry over. An annual plan gives the same monthly allowance for twelve months at ten months’ price. We may change plan prices with at least 30 days’ notice by email; the new price applies from your next renewal.

5.4 Team seats. A Newsroom plan owner may add up to five colleagues by email address. Seat holders share the owner’s monthly allowance and download under the owner’s licence, so every photo a seat holder takes is licensed to the owner’s organisation. The owner is responsible for seat holders’ use and must remove people who leave.

5.5 Accounts. There are no passwords. We send a sign-in link to your email address each time you sign in; keep that mailbox secure, as anyone with access to it can download on your account.

5.6 Enterprise. Larger allowances, commercial use and invoicing are agreed separately in writing and are not covered by the prices above.

6. Delivery, downloads and the right to cancel

6.1 What you get. The full-resolution JPEG as supplied by the photographer, without the watermark shown on previews, with the credit and licence written into the file’s metadata. Previews on the site are reduced in size and watermarked; the delivered file is not.

6.2 How it arrives. A single photo is delivered by a download link emailed to the address given at checkout, valid for 14 days, with a further link available on request. Pack and plan holders download directly from the photo’s page while signed in. Files are delivered immediately after payment.

6.3 Cancellation (consumers). If you are buying as a consumer, you normally have 14 days to cancel a distance purchase under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013. Because photos are digital content delivered at once, by ticking the terms box at checkout you expressly ask us to begin delivery immediately and acknowledge that you lose the right to cancel once the download link is issued or the download starts. If you change your mind before that point, email us and we will refund in full.

6.4 Cancellation (businesses). If you are buying for a business, the statutory right to cancel does not apply and all sales are final once delivered.

6.5 Plans. You may cancel a plan at any time from the Manage plan link on the Photos page or by email. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the period already paid for; you keep access until then and are not charged again. Annual plans are not refundable for the unused months, except where the law requires.

6.6 Faulty files. If a file is corrupt, is not the photo you selected, or is materially different from its preview, tell us within 30 days and we will replace it or refund it. This does not affect your statutory rights.

6.7 Refunds are made to the original payment card, usually within five working days. When a single-photo sale is refunded, the licence for that photo ends and any published use must be removed.

7. Copyright and ownership

7.1 Copyright in every photo stays with the photographer (or with The Aviation Hub for our own photos). Buying a licence does not transfer ownership of the photo or any rights in it beyond those in clause 2.

7.2 The photographer’s moral rights, including the right to be identified as the author, are asserted. The credit in clause 4 is how that right is met.

7.3 Aircraft liveries, airline logos, airport branding and registrations shown in photos belong to their owners. The editorial licence does not grant any right to use those marks other than as they incidentally appear in the photo, which is why the licence does not extend to advertising.

7.4 Photos are supplied as editorial images. Unless a photo’s page says otherwise, no model release or property release has been obtained. If a photo shows an identifiable person and you intend a use that needs their consent, that is for you to obtain.

7.5 Photographers confirm to us that they took each photo, own the copyright, and were lawfully present where it was taken. We take reasonable care to check this but cannot guarantee it; clause 8 sets out what happens if a claim arises.

8. Our promises and limits of liability

8.1 We promise that we have the right to grant you this licence, that the delivered file will match its preview in content, and that we will deliver it as described in clause 6.

8.2 Beyond that, photos are supplied as they are. We do not promise that a photo is suitable for a particular purpose, that captions and metadata (registration, airline, date, location) are free of error, or that a photo is free of third-party claims of the kind in clause 7.4.

8.3 If a third party claims that your use of a photo within this licence infringes their copyright, tell us promptly, stop using the photo if we ask, and let us handle the claim. We will refund the price you paid for that photo. Where we cannot resolve the claim, our total liability to you for it is capped as in 8.4.

8.4 Our total liability to you for any sale, pack or plan period, whether in contract, tort or otherwise, is limited to the amount you paid us for that sale, pack or plan period. We are not liable for loss of profit, revenue, data or goodwill, or for indirect or consequential loss.

8.5 Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot be limited by law. If you are a consumer, nothing here affects your statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

8.6 You agree to cover us and the photographer for any loss arising from your use of a photo outside this licence or in breach of clause 3.

9. Ending the licence or your plan

9.1 A licence for a photo you have downloaded lasts indefinitely, and survives the end of your plan, the expiry of your pack, the withdrawal of the photo from the library, and the end of our arrangement with the photographer. Pieces already published may stay published.

9.2 We may end a licence, and close a plan or account, without refund if you use a photo outside clause 2, breach clause 3, or share sign-in access with people outside your team seats. We will tell you why and, except where the breach is deliberate, give you seven days to put it right first.

9.3 If a licence ends under 9.2 you must stop using the photo, remove it from anywhere you control, and delete the file.

9.4 We may withdraw a photo from the library at any time, for example at the photographer’s request. This does not affect licences already granted.

9.5 If we close the photo library, plans will not be renewed and unused pack credits will be refunded pro rata.

10. General

10.1 Changes. We may update these terms. The version in force when you pay governs that purchase; for plans, changes apply from your next renewal and we will email plan holders at least 30 days before a change that reduces what you get.

10.2 Privacy. We handle your details as set out in our Privacy Policy. Stripe processes card payments under its own terms. We keep a record of each licence sold (photo, buyer email, date, price) so that photographers can be paid and licences can be verified.

10.3 Notices. Email is enough for any notice under these terms: ours to the address you gave at checkout, yours to james.field@theaviationhub.co.uk.

10.4 Whole agreement; severance. These terms, the price shown at checkout and the photo’s page are the whole agreement. If any clause is found unenforceable, the rest stands.

10.5 Transfer. You may not transfer a licence, pack or plan to anyone else. We may transfer our rights to a successor who takes over The Aviation Hub.

10.6 Law and courts. These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. Disputes go to the courts of England and Wales; if you are a consumer living in Scotland or Northern Ireland you may also use your local courts.

10.7 Contact. The Aviation Hub, james.field@theaviationhub.co.uk. For licence enquiries, quote the photo code (PH and four digits) shown on the photo’s page and in your receipt.
