Kumar Sangakkara, the former Sri Lanka cricket captain and current Rajasthan Royals head coach, went public on 28 October 2026 with a Ryanair discrimination allegation, posting on X to say gate staff at Dublin Airport (DUB) had subjected him and his family to threatening and unacceptable conduct.

The post drew immediate attention given Sangakkara's profile. He retired from international cricket in 2015 after 594 appearances across all formats, having scored 12,400 Test runs and 14,234 ODI runs for Sri Lanka, according to Hindustan Times. He is now 48 and serves as head coach and director of cricket at IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals, a role he has held since 2021, with a break and subsequent reappointment, as Aviation A2Z reports.

What Sangakkara Said About Ryanair Discrimination

His post on X addressed Ryanair directly. "I was with my family just now, and it was shocking. The tone of address, the mishandling of procedure, and the threatening behaviour. Unacceptable for any passenger. First bad experience in Dublin," he wrote, according to Hindustan Times.

He also asked publicly: "Has anyone experienced discriminatory gate personnel @Ryanair in Dublin?" The framing invited others to share similar encounters, and the post circulated widely.

Sangakkara described the staff's tone, their handling of procedure and their behaviour as threatening, but did not disclose what had triggered the confrontation, nor did he name any individual employees, as Aviation A2Z notes. Whether the dispute related to boarding, travel documents or another procedure was not made clear by either source.

A Response from Another Sri Lankan Traveller

Fellow Sri Lankan Sanjiva Weerawarana replied to the post with his own account. "Kumar, I have experienced discrimination in every part of the West. I lived there for 16 years, travelled back and forth for another 25, and now I'm done," he wrote, as reported by Hindustan Times.

Sangakkara acknowledged the response, replying that the experience was "quite jarring," according to the same report. The exchange gave the original allegation further weight in the public conversation on social media.

Ryanair's Position

At the time of reporting, Ryanair had not publicly responded to the allegations, according to Hindustan Times and Aviation A2Z. No formal complaint by Sangakkara against the carrier had been confirmed as of publication, Aviation A2Z adds.

Ryanair is Europe's largest low-cost carrier by passenger numbers, and Dublin is both its home base and its busiest hub. The airline's gate procedures have drawn public comment before, though this allegation is notable for its specific focus on staff conduct and discrimination rather than fees or baggage rules. Readers wanting a broader view of the carrier's operations can use our Airline Search to find our full Ryanair coverage.

What This Means

Allegations of discriminatory conduct at airport gates are taken seriously by regulators and consumer bodies in the United Kingdom and across the European Union, where carriers operating into EU airports are bound by EU261/2004 passenger rights rules and broader equality legislation. Whether Dublin Airport's own authorities become involved will depend in part on whether a formal complaint is lodged.

Sangakkara's decision to raise the matter publicly rather than through an official channel reflects a pattern seen increasingly among high-profile travellers. Social media posts of this kind can move faster than airline complaint processes and attract regulatory scrutiny without any formal filing.

For a figure of his standing, travelling with family, to describe the encounter as shocking and to call it his first bad experience in Dublin is a pointed assessment. It does not tell us what happened procedurally. It does tell us he felt the treatment was tied to who he and his family are, not to any genuine procedural concern.

The Bottom Line

Ryanair has a discrimination allegation on record against its gate staff at Dublin Airport, made publicly by one of cricket's most decorated figures. The airline had not responded as of publication. Until it does, or until Sangakkara confirms whether he intends to file a formal complaint, the account on X stands as the only detailed version of what took place.

We will update our coverage if Ryanair issues a statement or if any formal complaint process is confirmed.
