Sichuan Airlines is planning a significant upgrade to its Chengdu Tianfu to Tokyo Narita service, with AeroRoutes reporting that the carrier has tentatively filed Airbus A330-300 operations on the route from 4 March 2027.

The move represents a step up in capacity. The A330-300 will replace the Airbus A321neo currently assigned to the route, bringing a widebody aircraft onto a trunk leisure and business corridor between southwest China and Japan.

The New Schedule

The upgraded service will run five times weekly, operating on all days except Tuesday and Wednesday. Outbound flight 3U3961 departs Chengdu Tianfu (TFU) at 09:35 local time and arrives at Tokyo Narita (NRT) at 15:10. The return, flight 3U3962, departs Narita at 16:40 and touches down back in Chengdu at 21:45, according to AeroRoutes.

The timings give passengers a comfortable connection window in both directions, with same-day returns feasible from either end for short business trips.

What the Sichuan Airlines Upgrade Means

Switching from a narrowbody A321neo to an A330-300 on a route of this distance is a meaningful commitment. The A330-300 typically seats between 250 and 300 passengers in a two-class layout, depending on configuration, and carries additional cargo capacity alongside those seats. For a route linking Chengdu, one of China's largest inland cities, with a major Japanese gateway, widebody operations open up options for both leisure travellers and freight.

It is worth noting that the filing is described as tentative. Schedules at this distance from the start date can change, and readers should confirm arrangements closer to travel.

The Bottom Line

The filing points to growing confidence in the Chengdu to Tokyo market. If the A330-300 service launches as planned in March 2027, it will give passengers on this route a materially different product, more seats, wider cabins and the range comfort that widebody operations bring.
