A Southwest Airlines flight from Santa Ana to San Jose declared an emergency shortly after departure on Friday 6 November 2026.

Flight WN3396 left John Wayne Airport in Orange County bound for Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport in northern California. The aircraft never turned north toward its destination. Instead, it remained close to the Southern California coast.
The reason for the emergency remains unclear. Southwest Airlines has not yet commented on the incident.
What The Flight Data Shows
Flightradar24 data shows the aircraft climbing out of Santa Ana and heading south over the Pacific Ocean. The crew then flew a series of tight loops a short distance off the Orange County coastline. The pattern is typical of a crew working through a problem before committing to a landing.
Playback places the jet over the water at around 19:13 UTC, which is 11:13 local time. The aircraft then tracked back toward the mainland, close to its departure airport.
The airport where the flight eventually landed has not yet been confirmed.
Why Crews Hold After Declaring An Emergency
Holding patterns like this one are common after an emergency declaration. They give pilots time to work through checklists and diagnose the problem. They also allow air traffic control to clear surrounding traffic and alert emergency services on the ground.
A declaration does not always mean the aircraft is in danger. It gives the crew priority handling and ensures fire and rescue teams stand by for the landing.
Crews sometimes hold to burn fuel and bring the aircraft below its maximum landing weight. Runway length matters at Santa Ana. The main runway at John Wayne Airport measures around 5,700 feet, which is short by the standards of a major commercial airport.
The Santa Ana To San Jose Route
Southwest Airlines is the only carrier flying nonstop between Santa Ana and San Jose. The route covers roughly 343 miles, with a typical flight time of around 1 hour 20 minutes.
The airline operates several daily rotations on the sector, making it a busy link between Orange County and Silicon Valley.
Southwest flies a fleet made up entirely of Boeing 737 aircraft. The airline has not yet confirmed which variant operated today’s service.
A Previous Emergency On The Same Route
This is not the first time a Southwest flight from Santa Ana to San Jose has run into trouble. In February 2018, Southwest flight 2123 landed back at John Wayne Airport after a report of smoke on board.
The crew evacuated passengers using the slides before the aircraft reached the gate. Authorities reported no serious injuries.
