United Airlines Elevated 787-9 Guide: Routes, Seats and Tips

United Airlines is spreading its most premium aircraft across more of its network.

The carrier’s Elevated Boeing 787-9 will fly between San Francisco and Houston over the holidays and head to Sydney from December, adding to a growing list of long haul routes.

With only 222 seats, and almost half of them in premium cabins, this is the most luxurious widebody United has ever flown.

Here is everything you need to know about where it goes, what is on board and how to make sure you actually get it.

What Makes the United Airlines Elevated 787-9 Different

United’s existing 787-9s carry 257 passengers, including 48 business class seats, 21 premium economy seats and 188 economy seats, according to One Mile at a Time.

The Elevated version flips that balance.

Live and Let’s Fly reports that it carries 64 Polaris business class seats, 35 Premium Plus seats and 123 economy seats.

That means 99 of the 222 seats are premium.

Polaris and Premium Plus stretch all the way back to the trailing edge of the wing, with a single economy cabin behind.

The Cabins Explained

The headline product is Polaris Studio.

There are eight of these suites in the bulkhead rows of each Polaris cabin, and they are roughly 25% larger than a standard Polaris seat.

Simple Flying notes that Studio suites include lie flat beds, privacy doors, an ottoman and 27 inch 4K OLED screens.

Most also have a companion seat for dining together.

Behind them sit 56 standard Polaris suites in a one by two by one layout.

Every seat has direct aisle access, and for the first time on United, every Polaris seat has a door.

Premium Plus is arranged two by three by two, with 35 seats offering 38 inches of pitch.

Economy keeps the standard three by three by three layout, with a block of Economy Plus rows offering extra legroom.

Every Route the United Airlines Elevated 787-9 Is Scheduled to Fly

The aircraft entered international service from San Francisco, first to Singapore and then to London. Houston is the second base.

Upgraded Points reports that the United Airlines Elevated 787-9 begins flying from Houston to São Paulo, Tokyo Narita and Sydney on 24 October.

London Heathrow follows from Houston on 5 January.

The latest additions came in a schedule update filed around 24 September.

AeroRoutes shows the aircraft operating daily between San Francisco and Houston from 25 October to 15 December.

San Francisco to Sydney follows from 2 December, initially three times weekly.

Travel Radar reports that it increases to daily from 17 December for the peak holiday season.

The domestic San Francisco to Houston rotation is especially interesting.

It gives travellers a rare chance to try an ultra premium widebody on a short domestic hop, and it helps United Airlines position aircraft between its two Elevated hubs.

When the aircraft launched, United sold Studio as an upgrade from a standard Polaris booking.

Live and Let’s Fly reported introductory pricing of $499, regardless of route.

There is an important catch. The Points Guy notes that passengers booked on the new Polaris Base fare are not eligible for the Studio upgrade.

If Studio matters to you, book a full Polaris fare and check upgrade availability early.

With just eight suites per flight, they sell out quickly on popular routes.

How to Make Sure You Get the Elevated Aircraft

United operates several different 787 configurations, so it pays to check before you book.

The simplest test is the seat count.

Seat Compare explains that 222 seats means the Elevated aircraft, while 257 seats means the older 787-9 layout without doors.

Remember that deployments can be seasonal.

Travel And Tour World notes the San Francisco to Sydney Elevated service is scheduled through March 2027, so later dates may revert to a standard aircraft.

Aircraft swaps also happen. If the Elevated cabin is the reason for your booking, check the seat map again a few days before departure.

Why United Airlines Is Going So Premium

This aircraft is a clear bet on premium demand.

Aviation A2Z reports that the new layout adds 16 business class seats and 14 premium economy seats, while removing 65 economy seats compared with the existing 787-9.

That trade only makes sense if United can fill the front of the aircraft at strong fares. Its decision to keep adding routes suggests it is doing exactly that.

The strategy also helps United compete with foreign carriers on routes such as Sydney, Singapore and Tokyo.

Those airlines have long offered excellent premium products, and a doored suite puts United on a much more equal footing.

How Many More Are Coming?

One Mile at a Time reports that United expects to take delivery of around 30 of these aircraft by the end of 2027, with 20 originally planned before the end of 2026.

Boeing delivery delays could affect that timeline.

Even so, the number of Elevated routes has grown steadily this year, and more are likely to follow as new jets arrive.

The aircraft also features Starlink connectivity, part of a wider trend we examined in our analysis of Starlink’s popularity with airlines.

The Bottom Line

The Elevated 787-9 is the best long haul product United Airlines has ever offered.

If you are flying from San Francisco or Houston to Asia, Australia, South America or London, it is worth checking whether your flight uses it.

Check the seat count, avoid the Polaris Base fare if you want Studio, and recheck the aircraft before departure.

With those steps, you give yourself the best chance of enjoying United’s new flagship.
