In the last few moments, American Airlines flight AA2952 from Chicago to Boston has declared an emergency moments after departure.

UPDATE #1 @ 1825 UK time – The aircraft has been making some manoeuvres following the emergency call.

UPDATE #2 @ 1828 UK time – The aircraft is descending through 5,000 feet and is setting up for an emergency landing.

UPDATE #3 @ 1829 – The aircraft is now on final approach. Landing imminent.

Cause is unknown.

UPDATE #4 @ 1837 UK time – TOUCHDOWN!

American Airlines flight AA2952, originally bound for Boston, has appeared to have made a safe emergency landing back into Chicago.

It is understood that N9006 is the aircraft involved in the incident.

As per data from Planespotters, N9006 is a 12.7 year old Airbus A319 that was delivered to the airline back in August 2013.

Of the A319 variant, the airline has 132 of them in their fleet, of which 125 are in active service, and seven are parked, offering an average age of 22.1 years.

As well as the A319, American Airlines has the following other aircraft in their mainline fleet:

  • 48 Airbus A320s.
  • 305 Airbus A321s.
  • 405 Boeing 737s.
  • 67 Boeing 777s.
  • 70 Boeing 787s.
  • 1 Embraer E170.

In total, the carrier has 1,028 aircraft in their fleet, of which 993 are in active service, and 35 are parked, offering an average fleet age of 14.5 years.

At this stage, the reason for the emergency onboard is not yet known, but we know it is serious enough to prompt a 7700 emergency call.

As soon as we have more information pertinent to the cause of the emergency, we will update you accordingly.

UPDATE #5 @ 1840 UK time – The aircraft is currently at a standstill on the runway at Chicago O’Hare Airport.

UPDATE #6 @ 1841 UK time – Aircraft is understood to be undergoing an inspection on the runway.

It is still unclear what the reason for the emergency is.

UPDATE #7 @ 1844 UK time – Reports coming in of mayday call being due to an engine failure.

UPDATE #8 @ 1845 UK time – Inspection complete, aircraft has vacated the runway and is taxiing to stand.

UPDATE #9 @ 1847 UK time – Live ATC feed of the mayday call happening, which confirms call of engine failure.
