In the last few moments, a British Airways Boeing 777 flying from Chicago to London has declared an emergency over Northern Ireland.
G-YMMR is the aircraft involved in the situation.

Emergency Updates: British Airways BA296 Chicago-London…

UPDATE #1 @ 1132 UK time – The aircraft is cruising at FL390 currently, with no signs of a descent as of yet.
UPDATE #2 @ 1136 UK time – As stated, G-YMMR is the aircraft involved in the incident.
As per data from Planespotters.net, G-YMMR is a 16.8 year old Boeing 777-200ER that was delivered to British Airways back in March 2009.
Of the 777-200 variant, the UK carrier has 43 of them in their fleet.
Moreover, of the 43, 42 are in active service, with one currently parked, offering a average age of 25.8 years.
As well as the 777-200, the airline has the following other aircraft in their mainline fleet:
- 23 Airbus A319s.
- 93 Airbus A320 Family aircraft.
- 31 Airbus A321 Family aircraft.
- 18 Airbus A350-1000s.
- 12 Airbus A380s.
- 16 Boeing 777-300ERs.
- 42 Boeing 787 Dreamliner Family aircraft.
- 20 Embraer E190s.
In total, British Airways have 298 aircraft in their fleet, of which 278 are in active service, 20 are parked, and have an average fleet age of 14.2 years.
UPDATE #3 @ 1142 UK time – The crew have changed the squawk code from 7700 to 5150, indicating the issue onboard is under control.
We will continue to monitor the flight until it’s arrival.

UPDATE #4 @ 1152 UK time – British Airways flight BA296 from Chicago, which briefly declared an emergency, has started it’s descent into London Heathrow.
The reason for the emergency call is still not clear.

UPDATE #5 @ 1219 UK time – TOUCHDOWN!
The Boeing 777 has touched down safely into Heathrow, following it’s brief emergency call.
