In the last few moments, a Copa Airlines flight has declared an emergency in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Information is fluid at the present moment, with the aircraft near the edge of a runway.

Updates: Copa Airlines Flight CMP299 in Santo Domingo…


In the last few moments, a Copa Airlines flight has declared an emergency in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

UPDATE #1 @ 1914 UK time – At this stage, the reason for the emergency declaration is unclear.

UPDATE #2 @ 1918 UK time – Copa Airlines flight CM299 was being operated by HP-9804CMP, a Boeing 737 MAX 8.

As per data from Planespotters, HP-9804CMP is a 0.7 year old airframe, which was delivered to the airline back in May 2025.

Of the Boeing 737 MAX 8 variant, the carrier has 15 of them in their fleet.

Moreover, of the 15, 14 are in active service, with one parked, offering an average fleet age of 0.6 years.

As well as the 737 MAX 8, Copa Airlines has the following other aircraft in their fleet:

  • 9 Boeing 737-700s.
  • 57 Boeing 737-800s.
  • 32 Boeing 737 MAX 9s.

In total, the airline has 113 aircraft in their fleet, of which two are parked and the rest in active service, with an average fleet age of 9.5 years.

CM299 is a routine scheduled flight between Santo Domingo and Panama City.

UPDATE #3 @ 1920 UK time – The aircraft has gone out of range on Flightradar24.

A very strange situation for sure at the moment – we will continue to monitor this.

UPDATE #4 @ 1921 UK time – The flight map of Copa Airlines flight CM299 Santo Domingo-Panama City is rather telling.

Furthermore, it looks like the aircraft departed, and not too long after, opted to return back.

An issue onboard the aircraft?

UPDATE #5 @ 1922 UK time – Bearing in mind the aircraft’s position was when coverage dropped, it is unclear whether an evacuation of the plane has occurred or not.

EMERGENCY UPDATE #6 @ 1940 UK time – What we know so far:
  • Copa Airlines flight CM299 departed from Santo Domingo bound for Panama City but had to return to the airport.
  • On arrival, the aircraft then squawked 7700, the emergency code.
  • The last known position on ADS-B was near the end of a runway on a taxiway.
  • Unclear whether an evacuation has happened or not.

UPDATE #7 @ 1945 UK time – An Arajet flight from Asuncion to Santo Domingo is holding near it’s destination.

It is unclear whether this is related to the emergency incident at the airport.

UPDATE #8 @ 1948 UK time – Multiple flights now holding near Santo Domingo following the incident.

UPDATE #9 @ 1955 UK time – It looks like Santo Domingo are accepting flights again.

Aircraft expected to depart have pushed back and the Arajet is out of the hold.

Cause Confirmed…


UPDATE #10 @ 2001 UK time – Local media reporting that the reason for the emergency was due to a threat received.

Also, it is understood that two flights, JetBlue 590 to Santiago and United Airlines 2404 to Punta Cana were temporarily diverted as a result.

Furthermore, it is unclear what the nature of the threat was to the airplane.

As soon as we have more information, we will update you accordingly.
