In the early hours of this morning UK time, a Delta Air Lines Airbus A330 suffered an uncontained engine failure after departure from Sao Paulo.
Information has arisen following this incident, which caused a bit of attention at the Brazilian airport.

Delta DL104 – Sao Paulo to Atlanta…

Delta Air Lines flight DL104, which suffered the uncontained engine failure, is a routine scheduled flight between Sao Paulo & Atlanta.
Furthermore, the aircraft involved in the incident was N813NW.
As per data from Planespotters.net, N813NW is a 19.3 year old Airbus A330-300 that started out life with Northwest Airlines back in December 2006.
Following the merger with Delta in 2008, the aircraft was transferred to the DL register as a result.
Of the A330-300 variant, Delta has 31 of them in their fleet.
Within the 31, 28 are in active service, and three are parked, offering an average age of 17.2 years.
As well as the A330-300, Delta Air Lines has the following other aircraft in their mainline fleet:
- 83 Airbus A220s.
- 57 Airbus A319s.
- 46 Airbus A320s.
- 221 Airbus A321s.
- 11 Airbus A330-200s.
- 39 Airbus A330-900s.
- 40 Airbus A350s.
- 80 Boeing 717s.
- 240 Boeing 737s.
- 90 Boeing 757s.
- 58 Boeing 767s.
In total, the carrier has 996 aircraft in their fleet, of which 952 are in active service, 44 are parked, and the average age is 15 years exactly.
Delta Air Lines flight DL104, which suffered the uncontained engine failure, departed Sao Paulo at 2349 local time on March 29.
The aircraft got to a couple of hundred feet in the air when the incident happened, resulting in the aircraft having to turn back.
Within 10 minutes, the aircraft was back on the ground safely without any further incident.
Aftermath of the Incident…
As a result of the incident, the airport closed for a certain amount of time due to the debris from the uncontained engine failure causing a fire at the airport.
As per AEROIN, it is understood that it ignited part of the airport’s grass.
It is understood that during the 10 minute flight around Sao Paulo, loud bangs were heard, and the controllers notified the pilots that they could see fire on the wings of the aircraft as well.
As per Flightradar24 data, N813NW, the Delta A330 involved in the uncontained engine failure, has remained on the ground in Sao Paulo since.
It is expected to do the flight later on tonight (March 30), and is scheduled to be on-time, but of course this is dependent on whether the issue at hand can be fixed in time or not.
