Within the last hour, American Airlines flight AA1641 from Miami to Guatemala City declared an emergency, prompting a return to the U.S airport.

Information is limited surrounding the incident at hand.

Within the last hour, American Airlines flight AA1641 from Miami to Guatemala City declared an emergency, prompting a return to the U.S airport.

American Airlines flight AA1641, which declared the emergency, is a routine scheduled flight between Miami and Guatemala City.

Furthermore, the aircraft involved in the incident was N346PR.

As per data from Planespotters.net, N346FR is a 8.8 year old Boeing 737-800 that was delivered to the airline back in September 2017.

Of the 737-800 variant, American Airlines has 303 of them in their fleet.

Within the 303, 295 are in active service, and eight are parked, offering an average fleet age of 16.6 years.

As well as the 737-800, American Airlines has the following other aircraft in their mainline fleet:

  • 132 Airbus A319s.
  • 48 Airbus A320s.
  • 306 Airbus A321s.
  • 103 Boeing 737 MAX 8s.
  • 67 Boeing 777s.
  • 70 Boeing 787s.

In total, the airline has 1,029 aircraft in their mainline fleet, of which 998 are in active service, and 31 are parked, with an average fleet age of 14.5 years.

American Airlines flight AA1641, which declared the emergency, departed from Miami (MIA) at 1131 local time, bound for Guatemala City.

To the west of the Everglades, the aircraft made a u-turn and proceeded to return to MIA.

Back over the Everglades, the aircraft then declared an emergency via the 7700 squawk code during the descent.

After around 40 minutes in the air, the aircraft made an emergency landing back into Miami without further incident.

At this stage, the reason for the emergency onboard American Airlines flight AA1641 Miami-Guatemala City is unclear.

What we do know is that it is serious enough to prompt the emergency declaration and subsequent u-turn back to MIA.
