New York JFK’s transformation into a next‑generation global gateway has taken another significant step forward, with TAP Air Portugal confirming it will relocate to the airport’s new Terminal 6 when phase one opens in 2026.
The move positions TAP alongside JetBlue and a strong roster of Star Alliance partners, strengthening the terminal’s international profile and reinforcing its role in the Port Authority’s multibillion‑dollar redevelopment of New York’s primary international hub.
A Strategic Move for TAP in a Key Transatlantic Market
TAP’s decision to shift its New York operations to Terminal 6 marks a notable milestone in the airline’s more than 50‑year presence in the market.
As the press release notes, “TAP has served the New York market for over 50 years,” operating daily nonstop flights to Lisbon with its Airbus A330neo and A321neo fleet.
The relocation will allow TAP to consolidate its operations in a modern, digitally enabled environment designed to streamline passenger flows and enhance the premium travel experience.
The airline will join an impressive lineup of carriers already committed to T6, including Air Canada, ANA, Avianca, Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Condor, Frontier, Icelandair, Kuwait Airways, and Norse.
For TAP, the move strengthens connectivity with its codeshare partner JetBlue and aligns the airline with a cluster of long‑haul operators that share similar passenger profiles and network synergies.
Terminal 6 as the Centrepiece of New York JFK’s $19 Billion Redevelopment
Terminal 6 is one of the flagship projects within the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s sweeping $19 billion plan to modernise JFK International Airport.
The redevelopment includes two entirely new terminals, major expansions of existing facilities, a new ground transportation centre, and a redesigned roadway network intended to simplify access and reduce congestion.
The first six gates of T6 are scheduled to open in 2026, with full completion expected by 2028.
Once finished, the terminal will feature 10 gates, nine of which are capable of handling widebody aircraft—an essential requirement for the long‑haul carriers that will call it home.
Steve Thody, CEO of JFK Millennium Partners, emphasised the strategic importance of TAP’s commitment, stating, “TAP Air Portugal’s decision to join our T6 family reinforces our vision to create a world-class gateway that connects people and cultures across the globe.”
His comments underline the terminal’s ambition not only to modernise infrastructure but to elevate the passenger experience and strengthen New York’s role as a global aviation crossroads.

A Digital‑First Passenger Experience
T6 has been designed around a digital‑first philosophy, with a focus on reducing friction at every stage of the journey.
According to the release, passengers can expect “a less than 5-minute average walk from the TSA security checkpoint exit to all gates,” a notable improvement in an airport known for its sprawling layout.
The terminal will offer biometric‑enabled self‑service bag drops, advanced TSA screening technologies, and a state‑of‑the‑art automated baggage system.
These features are intended to reduce wait times, improve reliability, and support a more seamless connection experience for international travellers.
Beyond operational efficiency, T6 aims to deliver a boutique, New York‑inspired atmosphere.
The terminal will house 100,000 square feet of shopping, dining, lounges, and amenities, alongside a curated public art programme developed in partnership with the Public Art Fund.
Multiple airline lounges, including a new arrivals lounge, will cater to premium passengers and long‑haul travellers seeking comfort and convenience.
Sustainability is a defining element of the T6 project. The terminal incorporates sustainably sourced materials, rooftop solar power, and energy‑efficient systems throughout its design.
Certification processes are underway for LEED Silver or Gold, as well as Envision and SITES, reflecting the Port Authority’s commitment to building environmentally responsible infrastructure.
A New Chapter for TAP and New York JFK
TAP’s move to Terminal 6 represents more than a change of address.
It signals the airline’s long‑term commitment to the New York market and its confidence in JFK’s transformation.
For the airport, TAP’s presence strengthens the terminal’s international mix and reinforces the broader vision of creating a world‑class, passenger‑centric gateway for the decades ahead.
