Air Niugini has taken another decisive step in its fleet renewal and network expansion strategy, launching its new Airbus A220-300 on the key Port Moresby to Sydney route.
The inaugural service, operated on Sunday 29 March 2026, marks the aircraft’s second international deployment following its introduction on flights to Cairns.
The move underscores the airline’s ambition to modernise its operations while strengthening its presence in one of its most strategically important markets.
Port Moresby to Sydney: Strengthening a Critical International Corridor
Sydney has long been a cornerstone of Air Niugini’s international network, serving as a vital gateway for business, tourism and family travel between Papua New Guinea and Australia.
The arrival of the A220-300 allows the airline to increase frequencies to three weekly services, operating every Sunday, Thursday and Friday.
Flights depart Port Moresby at 1:10pm and arrive in Sydney at 5:10pm, offering improved flexibility for travellers and better alignment with onward connections.
Beyond its role as a point-to-point link, the enhanced schedule supports broader regional connectivity.
Passengers travelling from Sydney can connect through Port Moresby to destinations across Papua New Guinea, as well as key international cities including Manila, Hong Kong, Singapore, Honiara, Port Vila, Nadi and, from July, Narita in Japan.
A Next-Generation Aircraft for a Modernised Fleet
Configured in a two-class layout with 138 seats, the Airbus A220-300 introduces a step-change in passenger comfort for Air Niugini.
The aircraft features wider seats, larger windows and a noticeably quieter cabin environment.
Onboard Wi-Fi is available to all passengers at no additional cost, reflecting the airline’s push to elevate the overall travel experience.
Operationally, the A220-300 brings significant advantages.
Its advanced design delivers improved fuel efficiency, reduced emissions and enhanced reliability, supporting Air Niugini’s long-term sustainability and performance goals.
The type will progressively replace older aircraft on the Sydney route, contributing to lower operating costs and a reduced environmental footprint.

Leadership Endorsement for a Strategic Milestone
Air Niugini Chief Executive Officer Alan Milne described the deployment of the A220-300 to Sydney as a major advancement for the airline.
“The deployment of the Airbus A220-300 to Sydney is a significant development for Air Niugini as we continue to modernise our fleet and expand our international reach,” he said.
He emphasised that the aircraft reinforces the airline’s commitment to delivering a higher standard of service for passengers travelling between Papua New Guinea and Australia.
Milne also highlighted Sydney’s importance within the network, noting that increased frequencies and the introduction of the new aircraft will create more opportunities for travel, trade and economic engagement between the two countries.
Sydney Airport Welcomes a New Chapter
Sydney Airport CEO Scott Charlton echoed the significance of the milestone, stating, “Today marks an exciting new chapter for Air Niugini at Sydney Airport.”
He noted that the A220-300 enhances comfort for passengers while reflecting a shared commitment to efficiency and sustainable growth.
The airport’s support underscores the route’s importance and the strengthening partnership between the two organisations.
As additional A220 aircraft join the fleet, Air Niugini plans to expand the type’s role across both domestic and international operations.
Following its introduction on services to Cairns and Sydney, Honiara in the Solomon Islands will be the next destination to welcome the new-generation aircraft.
The airline’s long-term vision centres on delivering safe, reliable and modern air travel for Papua New Guinea, and the A220 family is set to become a cornerstone of that strategy.
